Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport needed additional runway space so the built a runway over the existing interstate highway. The structure of the runway is a bridge and there’s no dirt on that bridge. Yet, possibly because of the width of the runway bridge and the neighboring taxiway bridge, several mappers have tagged the segments of I-285 underneath the runway and taxiway as tunnel.

Tunnel

Bridge

Note that both articles talk about the lower roadway being surrounded by dirt for the case of a tunnel. While both articles do say that it’s a judgement call, the construction methods used absolutely were bridge construction methods. The bridge article warns against using both bridge and tunnel tags to describe the situation and it’s absolutely more of a bridge situation than it is a tunnel situation.

I have messaged the most recent editor asking them to remove their tunnel tags and I’m posting this diary entry for future reference when this inevitably comes up again. Happy mapping, y’all.

In editing US-78 and I-285, I have added the SVG shields for these roads from wikimedia into the symbol tag.

After several days, the routes still seem to be missing the highway shield. If a way or relation has a symbol, shouldn't that actually get rendered over the way? If a way has several relations, shouldn't that get rendered as a group of symbols strung along the way along with the name? If this is already implemented in mapnik and osmarender, what am I doing wrong? If it's not already implemented, this would be a really cool feature (hint, hint to the coders out there).

On another way-related note, I've noticed that several ways have multiple names which should either be replaced by shield symbols from the route relations or displayed side-by-side along the way (where enough room is provided). (see osm.org/browse/way/40745075 where the way has the name US 78, US 29, State Route 8, and the local name "Lawrenceville Hwy" with name, name_1, name_2, name_3, tags).

As is, it seems that the only way to convey all of the road/route information is to list all of the information in the name tag (which is contraindicated in the wiki). (Ex. "name=Lawrenceville Highway (US-78 US-29 GA-8)")

On another symbols-related note, I've noticed that an item (way, node, relation) can only have a single tag of a certain type. Wouldn't it make sense to be able to tag an item with several of the same tag? For example, several grocery store chains in the United States have pharmacies (apothecaries) in some, but not all, of their locations. Wouldn't it be informative to be able to use several amenity=x tags on the node representing the building (or the way outlining the building)? The amenity symbol images could then tile above the building outline.

Happy OSMing.

MARTA Help Needed

Posted by dygituljunky on 11 September 2009 in English.

The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) operates a subway system in the metro Atlanta area.

On the East-West Line, the line on the west side of Five Points Station (osm.org/go/ZQqqob6FH--) is drawn with a single line marked as railway=subway.

East of Five Points, the line is drawn as two parallel lines marked as railway=rail (see Kensington station for a fairly clean example: osm.org/go/ZSACaBv6o-).

The railway=station tag (osm.wiki/Tag:railway%3Dstation) seems to be intended for use as a point on a single line representing a railway.

Would it be more useful for me to merge the eastbound and westbound rails for MARTA or is it more useful having each direction drawn separately?

(I intend to change all of the MARTA lines to railway=subway but it would probably be easier to go through and make all of the changes at once...)

Thanks,

Emory University edits

Posted by dygituljunky on 9 September 2009 in English.

I've spent a considerable amount of time modifying the roads on the Emory University campus to try to reflect the reality on the ground. Emory likes to move the roads around so the old map no longer reflected the changes put in place over the last couple of years.

Most of my work has centered on Eagle Row (formerly Fraternity Row), Dickey Drive, Asbury Circle, and the other paths and roads around the main quadrangle.

Emory also likes to rename streets. A number of the TIGER imports showed street names that are one or two street names old. I've modified these streets with the old_name attribute suggested in the wiki.

Finally, I noticed that the wiki says not to abbreviate names (osm.wiki/Key:old_name#Abbreviation_.28don.27t_do_it.29) so I started the process of fully spelling out the names of streets.

I'm fairly new at OSM and I'm looking for critiques. Let me know if I need to do anything differently.
