After having mapped all sculptures in the Middelheim museum,
I decided to start mapping the rose garden of the Vrijbroekpark in Mechelen.
However, there is no established tagging schema for this yet. I found e.g. landuse=flowerbed, a few landcover=flowerbed and natural=flowerbed. There are perhaps a few other schemes in use, but I could not find something that was really used a lot. So I decided to go for the following for the moment:
- landuse=flowerbed
- genus=rose
- genus:nl=rozen
- group:nl=…
- variety:nl=…
it is pretty easy to change this in case someone points me to a better tagging schema. I have also made a small JOSM preset for personal use with those tags.
Since the dogs do not like the very slow pace needed to make notes and pictures, I only did a small part. No problem, we come there quite often, so next time we continue this work.
In the meantime I already made another map showing all the flowerbeds I mapped so far
Please drop me note in case you know a better way to tag the flowerbeds

Thanks for the example. I’ve been thinking about this, but more focused on leisure=garden.
I see you use garden=rose_garden and garden:type=botanical.
On the wiki there is also garden=style.
I was trying to work out which ‘garden’ tags are the most appropriate - it doesn’t seem clear.
I was trying to tag a ‘community garden’ - mixture of allotment, garden, orchard. Any suggestions?
I would suggest adding a little more detail to this page:
osm.wiki/Proposed_features/flowerbed
And adding a note to the leisure=garden page.

Tag info has 11 entries for garden:type=community (http://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/garden%3Atype#values). If the areas are clearly separated, you might tag each individual area, e.g. garden:type=allotment or landuse=orchard
I think you are right and that garden:style=rosarium would be better than garden=rose_garden. The latter was suggested by a mapper that I contacted before starting.
I’m not good at writing documentation, so I don’t know how to add something useful to the flowerbed proposal.
