PoI mapping

Zapsal fsteggink 16. 2. 2009 v jazyce English.

Today was a good day to do some PoI mapping in Rue St-Jean and Chemin Sainte-Foy. It was a balmy -5 degrees Celsius, and only some light flurries were falling. Tip for myself: I need a pencil to write, and better gloves to write with. The result is that my note book is not very legible. After a while I went to a shop to get a better pen. Unfortunately they were out of stock (probably forgotten to be ordered), so I got the cashier's pen for free. It's not big, but it made me feel good that there are people out there others in dire need :)

One question: how should I deal with shops which have some eating areas? There were quite a few of them. I didn't map them (thinking that shops weren't that interesting). Tagging them both as restaurant and shop goes too far.

While exploring the Map features page on the Wiki, I noticed that someone definitely raised the bar for PoI mapping: osm.wiki/Tag:amenity%3Dbench

I'm myself not by on amenity=bench, but I can see where it's useful, and as long as it doesn't begin showing up and crowding out other stuff on the map, I'm fine with it.

After all, although not all data is used by the default map, the point is that it can be used to display whatever you want if you need it.

I'm not discarding the usefulness registering benches in OSM on beforehand, but for me it is quite a big leap toward triviality. Where does it end? Trash cans? Lamp posts? Trees in a forest?

One can just expect to find some benches, trash cans, etc. in a park. It is not a disaster if they are not mapped.

Maybe I was more surprised to find that tags like length, orientation, material, last_paint_date, armrest, etc. missing, although there is one for backrest!

I've seen proposals for thrash can, and there IS a tag for trees, in fact :p
