I'm following the water flow, for this dataset, as it's easier to upload this way.

I just choose a lake and get all the after flow from/to it. This way, im sure not to miss anything.
It needs to be done manually because when i get into towns, sometime local mapper have mapped out part of the water flow. So i need to contact them to see if i should replace, or modify the flow.
For this area, i got permission to replace the water flows and lakes where needed, as it was traced from Yahoo, and not as detailed.

That's all for now.
:)

Hi all,
I sent out a message to the talk-ca list with the details.

http://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk-ca/2009-July/001324.html

In short, the program is cooler than before :)

Anyway, I'm loading a bigger .osm file right now (wooded area). It's less than 500k so i think it's fine, just taking some time to load. ... but i'll probably use bulk_upload.pl next time. If people have a problem with me using JOSM for it.

I've changed ALL the tags with the updated script, now working on uploading and replacing the old data.

I still gotta update the wiki, but wanted to post it here 1st.

Cheers,

I added most of 092c08 jordan river,
Just not the waterbody part. (as it interfers with coastline)
I'll need to sit down with a few other experienced mappers to show what it looks like on my screen, then we can decide on how to deal with it.

The script did choke on the 'dead-end geobase' file, which puts a turning circle at the end of each road. Again, meeting with mappers would help.

I'm planning on a Canada Day mapping party, hopefully i can round up a few local mappers for that.

It's great to see more features rendered in the area. :-)

I'm still not sure about the 'duplicate nodes' as i might be loading more nodes than i need to. It'll take a second set of eyes. ... or a 3rd or more. (if anyone on here can spot it).

Thats all for now.

Ive added more of the features along the west coast trail, the only features i didn't add were those that were greater than 500k.

I'll be adding more of the 092c area this week. So far, no big compaints. :)

I'm now at BETA 0.61

At the end of the month, my hopes is that we can have a mapping party for the 092 area. And i'll learn how to use that builkupload script :) Which will come in handy.

I'm adding the big files by manually selecting 1/4 of it and copying to a new layer and deleting it from the current. This reduces the file size for uploading.
I'm keeping it at under 500kb as my magic number.

Let me know if it's to big to be using JOSM for.

Here's the method to the madness:

By going at it slow and steady i can:
1 - ensure the quality, and more eyes can be watching for errors
2 - i can teach others how the process goes, then more people going slowely, will get it done.
2a - the canvec.osm files would be stored on server somewhere so there always available, and no rush to get it in. Just upload around your GPS Tracks tile(s) area. Usually it's only 1 or 2 that you'd pass in a day.

3 - by working only in the area your comfortable with (and will physically travel) odds are that it will be a better map :)

4 - Once the tile 092c is loaded, i'll work on 092g12 (i think it is, that's the area that was loaded in by someone else and using geobase2osm super script.
I'll meet them in person, and do a "CanVec mapping party" this way, with more heads, we can prefect the process and then be ready to open up the can. ... canvec that is :)

Waterbody:
Any one think it's a good idea to load some big polygons to show the bay/cove/water region? (it'll show up on the garmin map) otherwise Garmin doesn't recognize the 'natural=coastline' tag, it just shows up as a thin line.
Renders in Kosmos fine though.

Personally, i'd like to add it. But it's open to the community :)

I added the tile area of 092c11 which is the top of the west coast trail.

It's a 57km backpacking trail which is only open from may 1st to sept 30th.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Coast_Trail

Perhaps the best hike in the world. :)
I havent done this hike myslef, but look forward to some day. ... now that it's almost mapped, it will certainly be easier. :)

.. PLUS, the map will stay constantly updated with each traveler going through it with their GPS :)

Anyway, I'm going to hold off on more uploading for now.

What I did find was that i can go ahead and create the .osm zip files containing all the features for the area. and merge the layers so it's easy to work with. This is for all those areas which have been mapped. For the areas that havent... still i'd rather go slowely, and make sure that the data loaded is QUALITY over a automated system.

By connecting with local people along the way (i'll contact people in Ucluelet to let them know the map exists, then they can go ahead and make the map better) .. and also state the problems.
So for now, i'll be working on the wiki progress chart, so it will help everyone follow along and not step on peoples toes :)

I added the rest of the map features for the sample area.
I noticed that after i deleted the big shape for the ocean it automatically changed the insides of the multi-polygon to water areas rather than empty.
So options
1 - to not worry about it.
2 - maybe not even add the waterbody features (undo it), because alot of those features were duplicated with the 'HD_1460009_2hydrographic_obstacle_entity_GeoBase.osm' area
3 - or maybe re-add it and just cut the southwest corner nodes, so its cut on an angle to show the water area.
Ideas?

I sent off a message to the talk list about changeset size. .. hoping that 411kb is fine. Anyone know if loading 1 or maybe 5 megs is OK, how big can i go before it annoys the servers? (then i need to use bulk upload).

You can now see all the rivers :-)

I looked at the maplint layer, is this a problem? Or is it ok the way it is?

Thanks

Hi all,
I've updated a few features, and now thinking about loading more stuff.
I havent heard many complaints about the data, so i think it's almost ready to start loading more.
Just check the 'history tab' for the details :)

I now have 11 bugs that are found, and all need to be addressed.

Please comment on the wiki, if you agree/disagree. With no comments, my assumption is that it's fine.. But thats not a good assumption.

I'll have the Converted OSM files available later today (hopefully)
Then it would be a good time to update the wiki.

Hi all,
upload 2of2 samples of LX1000069_0marina
osm.org/browse/changeset/1198622

and
upload 2of2 samples of LX2480009_0campground
osm.org/browse/changeset/1198574

and
upload 1 sample of TR1750009_1ferry_connection_segment_GeoBase
osm.org/browse/changeset/1198318

Please check these out, and hopefully I can get some good feedback.

Should I have less tags?
I kept the definition tag, as it's different than a definition of an OSM tag, as the OSM tags can and WILL change, when the CanVec tags (most likely) won't change.

Or, if you think there OK, that also helps too :)

Sam

Hi all,
Whats wild is that with this 'History' tab, you all can see what i've done anyway :)

The feature HD_148009_2waterbody_geobase
This feature is also in the GeoBase NHN set, but it's more clear in the CanVec set.
You can see the island which is listed in the canVec set as a 'reef' although for the coastline trace it's shown as an 'island'

This feature is ALSO listed in the HD_1460009_2hydrographic_obstacle_entity_GeoBase file. .. but as the sub_sea reef.
So it's hard to say what that area is... until actual observation.
So in short. .. using Bulk import without slowely going over the area.
A quick solution would be to view the data with the yahoo imagery. .. or view the GeoBase imagery as that might be better.

And Added HD_1470009_1single_line_watercourse_GeoBase .. the one that's in the NHN is the same thing. .. but covers a larger geographical area. ... but doesnt include the NAME field (need to work on that).

Location: Long Beach, Area C (Long Beach), Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District, British Columbia, V0R 3A0, Canada

Hi all,
I uploaded the wetlands SS_1320049_2wetland.osm file (just 3 shapes).. i think thats fine.
And i also re-uploaded the named feature file too. (Should be better now) :)

While i was at it, i noticed that this is what i currently have.

point,CODE,2080030,canvec:CODE,2080030
point,CODE,2080030,man_made,tower

But then adding these 2 tags, would probably help users because i cant find any suitable osm tag to describe this. Where "Other" means other than a water tank.

point,CODE,2080030,canvec:Entity,Tank - ( Citerne )
point,CODE,2080030,canvec:Value,Vertical_other - ( Verticale, autre )

So, what i CAN do is show the 'entity' & 'value' from the source, would this help?

Thanks,
Sam Vekemans

I have added some for map features to the sample area.

(Here's the total list of whats been added)

LX_2270009_2park_sports_field.osm

FO_1200009_0elevation_point_GeoBase.osm

BS_1250009_0navigational_aid.osm

EN_1120009_1power_line.osm

IC_1360019_2domestic_waste.osm

LX_1000039_2cemetery.osm

TR_1190009_0runway.osm

LX_2490009_0picnic_site.osm

EN_1360059_0power_substation.osm

IC_1350019_2pit.osm

HD_1450009_1man_made_hydrographic_entity_GeoBase.osm

Im making a wiki chart showing what features were uploaded.
Hopefully if people find errors they can point them out.

Im still finding more features that need to be fixed... but so far so good.

Cheers,
Sam

Location: Ucluelet, Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District, British Columbia, V0R 3A0, Canada

I added 3 more features that i figure are OK for scrutiny of you all, :-)

LX_1000039_2cemetery.osm

EN_1120009_1power_line.osm

BS_1250009_0navigational_aid.osm

and i removed the TO_1580009_0named_feature.osm file, as per bug3 & bug8
I found that there are more features that need fixing.. as well as making the wiki chart.

osm.wiki/Talk:Canvec2osm#Bugs3:Overlapping_Named_feature_nodes

We'll have to wait till next week for it to be rendered... but sooner on the Osmarender layer.. and instantly when checking the data.

Sam

Hi all,

This is 1 method where i can record my daily activity for the upload process and sharing what i am finding as i go along.
I'll also post on the talk-ca list, as well as keep the wiki page updated as much as possable.

But I think (for me) that posting a summery of activities here would help. :)

So the 1st features i loaded to OSM are;
BS_1370009_2residential_area.osm
&
TO_1580009_0named_feature.osm

I reported the bug about the languages (Bug3), and the Automatch discussion(Bug2) and Duplicate intersecting Nodes (Bug1). and Bug5 as users.

What I'm also doing is adding 'friends' as all those who i have communicated with. (As the Geobase:Acrosscanadatrails profile)

This way, it's separate from my regular mapper profile.

And everyone else who is planning on participating in the bulk import is encouraged todo the same (create a new user prefixed with "geobase:"

Commenting here, would create a good Historical Archive of the process. :)

Cheers,
Sam Vekemans

P.S. I'm itching to add more features, but i think its best to hold off, and make sure the process is good. :)
