Kosovo import is going along nicely

Posted by h4ck3rm1k3 on 13 February 2010 in English. Last updated on 14 February 2010.

most of this is coming from the street import
there is no way you will get in the top ten unless you import data.

here is an overview of the importer :

I just got notice that giscorps is recruiting for the first time an effort to improve the OpenStreetMap. They have 1900 volunteers, 250 of them have OSM experience. http://giscorps.org/

""
This mission has been brought to GISCorps by a non profit organization that is looking for several volunteers for a project in a flood stricken area of Albania. More details about the project and required qualifications can be found in here: http://www.giscorps.org/documents/jd_flossk_final.pdf

Please note that if you are interested in applying for this project, we need to hear back from you by Friday February 19th.

I saw this thread, and you know I am following all mentions of OSM on the web.

http://www.bewelcome.org/forums/s981-please_use_OpenStreetMap_instead_of_google_maps

Here are some points :
# OSM-people are full with work and probably won't contribute (but maybe help)
# Also for other software (i. e. Drupal) the OSM-plugins aren't as advance as Google's stuff

Anyone want to answer to them?

mike

Trains are great. Model trains are a great hobby.

I used to have a model train set from my Dad.
In fact, my uncle has a huge train set in Kansas.

OSM can be considered to be a big online model train set-

Maybe if we put some train simulations on there, people would use it more

like train time tables with different locomotives, that would be very popular.

People could add in all the train time tables,
and see where the train is at any given time
even mark them as being late.

On that note, what about playing http://lincity-ng.berlios.de/ with osm data?

Dear OSM people,
I would like to suggest that we start working on a new application,
an global address database for all address data that is creative commons.
That database would be for staging into OSM. It would allow people to manage the connection to OSM , for example to find all the records by a criteria and then click on the map where they are.

This would be a great help, we could extend it to just have lists of cities, streets etc that are not there yet. Zipcodes as well. All types of tabular data that is georeferenced, but not in OSM yet.

I would like to ask you all to help disect this article :

http://blog.copyrightalliance.org/2010/02/can-a-crowd-get-me-from-a-to-b/

""So what does this leave us? Open-source mapmaking can’t exist without professional maps to build on. We can’t assume accuracy will emerge from the collective, an important point given the fact that accuracy is a bit more important in a map then in, say, a Wikipedia entry on the latest “Family Guy” episode""

Everybody is invited to help out with Kosovo and Albania.

I know that there are alot of new people working on Haiti,
and if that project is saturated and you are looking for something to do to help out, please help out the people in the balkans.

We have been getting a lot of raw data and there is so much work to do.

We have 10 million gps+ points that need to be traced (from Logistic Plus a delivery company)

http://www.archive.org/details/GpsDataFromKosovoDatapoints http://www.archive.org/details/GpsDataFromKosovoDatapoints2 http://www.archive.org/details/GpsDataFromKosovoDatapoints3

We have The entire Streetnetwork of Kosovo that needs to be merged and imported (from iMMAP, Information Management & Mine Action Programs iMMAP http://www.immap.org/index.php )

http://www.archive.org/details/Kosova_Road_Data_from_iMMAP http://osmopenlayers.blogspot.com/2010/01/new-delivery-of-road-data-for-kosovo.html

We have Highres maps of Prishtina with every building , parcel and street on it from the town. http://www.archive.org/details/PrishtinaStreetsOSM

And we have lots of clean up to do, validation, removing of duplicates. We have also the problem of naming of the streets etc.

For Albania we also have the GNS names I have converted, We have the street network from DLR in vector format. I have imported only the Shkoder region.

Here are the street data files from DLR:
http://www.archive.org/details/OpenstreetmapAlbaniaRoadDataFromDeutschenZentrumsFrLuft-Und

Here are the GNS Names from Albania :
http://www.archive.org/details/OpenstreetmapAlbania

and we have lots of high resolution photos that need to be traced.
http://www.zki.caf.dlr.de/applications/2010/Albania/181_en.html

I am posting links to them here, but all of these are documented in my diary somewhere, if you are are interested and cannot find them, let me know. Most of the data is posted on archive.org just look. Or just ask me.

There has been so much news about OSM in Haiti that I have not been reporting it,
but this little typo might be indicative of the brain matrixes of people who cannot cope with croudsourced projects :
"Wiki's OpenStreetMap" ?

"""GeoEye by Google offered free satellite imagery for humanitarian workers, while Wiki's OpenStreetMap and Crisis Commons offered on-the-ground navigation information and linked up partner organizations.""""
http://asia.cnet.com/crave/2010/01/25/it-changing-the-face-of-humanitarian-aid-during-haiti-disaster/

I think this is like "Google’s OpenStreetMap program",

Please help with Prishtina DXF Import

Posted by h4ck3rm1k3 on 24 January 2010 in English.

I have here a dxf file of Prishtina in high quality.
http://www.archive.org/details/PrishtinaStreets

I have been able to convert it to lat/lon like this
cs2cs +proj=utm  +zone=34T +ellps=WGS84 +datum=WGS84 +units=m -f \"%.7f\"

Problem is that most of the points are in relative position, there is a grid.

I have pushed a version of two nickels that can process alot of this :
To git@github.com:h4ck3rm1k3/TwoNickels.git
  c8e4009..41f23f1  master -> master

It produces osm files with data in three groups :

1. points that are exact on the mark, (few)
2. points on the equator (0,0) relative to something
3. points that seem to be shifted over from utm34T

        720496.25, 506444.9375 -> 22.987450699423831679, 4.5791053696411907481

I have created averages of good points versus the shifted ones and
came up with these constant shifts:
       $n -= 187380;
       $e += 4228672;

They are still 15km off of prishtina..

So I would like one of you to please help with the autocad and
transform all coordinates into some single form so I can convert them.
Or please advice on these points.

thanks,
mike

I have imported a bunch of streets from the floodzone here
osm.org/browse/changeset/3693857

the osm data is online at archive.org here:
http://www.archive.org/details/OpenstreetmapAlbaniaRoadDataFromDeutschenZentrumsFrLuft-Und

You can all help in the merge process to make sure there are no duplicate nodes.
Also I have started the highres photo mapping of the floodzone,
the files are split into 1500x1500 chunks like this :
convert -crop 1500x1550 DLR_20100113_Albania_floods_formosat_north_high.jpg DLR_20100113_Albania_floods_formosat_north_high_tiles%d.jpg

Here is an example of the warped section, you can see the houses and all:
http://warper.geothings.net/maps/preview/1977

The highres can be downloaded with simple registration from the DLR

thanks again to the The Deutschen Zentrums für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR

A good example of an open data project is OpenStreetMap — a "a free editable map of the whole world". And the UK Government is planning to open up the UK Postcode data in 2010. Currently you have to pay to use this data. As more and more data becomes open, we'll see more clever and useful applications of it.

Here are the parts uploaded:
http://ia341314.us.archive.org/1/items/STREETDATA_Packages_Kosovo/

I have split the data into 500 street packages, just download one .

For example :
http://ia341314.us.archive.org/1/items/STREETDATA_Packages_Kosovo/ways_11000.osm.gz

I get that and open it with josm :

First you download the osm data into a new layer and compare the two.
Remove all streets from the new data that exist already

Then run the validator, fix all duplicate nodes, then start merging the ends of roads together, with m. use c to combine two ways.
use shift to select many streets. use 3 to zoom to the selected objects. use mouse wheel for zooming.

There is the video I made:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-5mytiz6Cw

Here is the changeset I made:
osm.org/browse/changeset/3610671

Please try this out!
