@LivingWDragons
YES. I hope that, in 2-3 years, the Wikimedia foundation and OpenStreetMap will work so closely that every single city article may get AUTOMATICALLY or semi-automatically:
* a such map and dot (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Cuthbert%27s_Society )
* in the wikipedia_style (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Maps/Conventions/Exchanges_maps )...
* ...or the user's selected style (out of ~5 allowed map styles, in "my preferences").
I encourage to move toward this ! That would be great to have wikipedia with better maps than Britannica 8]

@Bruce:
Set up our own server means to split in 2 roads database :
* one on OpenStreetMap.org , still continously update and improving.
* one on my server, still missing a lot of content, and not update like OSMap.org

@Ivan
O.O !
* http://cloudmade.com/products/style-editor and...
* http://cloudmade.com/products/style-editor/demo
is really interesting ! I hope I can create a style there, and export it~ to later share it with OSMap... maybe 8]

Oh. Ok.
Wikigraphists already use the way you talked about ("An alternative is to get an SVG output from the Export tab of the main map and customize to your heart's content.")
But that will divide our work in hundreds maps, impossible to update all together.

QUESTIONS :
* Is it tecnicaly possible to get such 'skin' working on Open street map directly ?
* May OpenStreetMap provide allow this ? Who contact ? Where ?

WHY (Short term):
Walk toward a STRONG collaboration could really ease the integration of OpenStreetMaps into wikipedia city/town articles such as NY, Paris, HongKong, etc.
Actually, I, and many leading Wikigraphists hope that OpenStreetMap may be MORE, FAR MORE integrate like a 'patch' to Wikipedia. Allowing wiki users to enter the coordinates of an area, and get the area's roads, in wikistyle, display into the wikipedia article.
(in a wikipedia page's code, a code such:

Would display the roads of Paris, in wikipedia style)

ACTUALLY:
To be frank, I think OpenStreetMap WILL, and HAVE TO become the core of wikipedia map making, as well as wikipedia map display. The 2 projects are similar in their spirit. And OpenStreetMap technology alone can allow wikipedia to get a professional look on the Map side.
Indeed, the Graphic lab testify that on 5.000 images creations, ~2.000-2.500 have been MAPS (!). Maps are a core aspect of Wikipedia's illustrations. Wikipedia NEED your technology, as well as you can get far highest visibility in the process of a STRONG collaboration.

So, who on OpenStreetMap can choice to move to a such STRONG COLLABORATION way ?
