Canal de la Marne au Rhin

Here: osm.org/go/0B9VFgLi-- is another one.

I noticed that this one has simply been tagged as a canal. I don't think that is right. To me, a lock is something that moves ships from one level to another. Manmade is not a bad idea. We probably need to distinguish between (vertical) ship lifts (example: osm.org/go/0GMea1tDd-- ) and inclined planes (as they are called). The latter may actually be tagged as a railway (that is what it is).

Canal de la Marne au Rhin

Given that a ship lift in this case is simply a special type of lock, I would tag it as that. Maybe instead of lock=yes, use lock=lift? In case it's a lift for carrying out repairs, maybe one should tag waterway=dock + dock=lift?

Just some ideas.

That's fantastic! Many thanks also for your frequent diary entries.

Organisation - let's make it happen!

Look, most of us are probably quite happy to play in a "junky playground". OpenStreetmap is not a profit seeking company or something.

If you want to help mapping, do your part. But please try to be less arrogant (your message: "there is no value behind it"; your profile page: "it is time to do it right").

Which businesses to tag

Personally, I think this is a case of don't tag for the map renderer(s).

I recently started trying to tag any shop/building in streets in my city centre. You will quickly find that you need to dig into OSMdoc or something similar to check if there is consensus on tags for stuff.

The only guide, I guess, whether to tag or not is whether it is (fairly) static. Anything in a building is. And if it does change, people will be quite quick in correcting it.

Large forests with residential areas

I don't think a layering solution is a good idea. In general an area cannot be a residential area and wood/forest at the same time. You can create "holes" (donut-style) in the wood/forest using multi-polygon areas as suggested by PatDi. You can do this with Potlach or JOSM.
