Good choice - that's my recommendation at http://www.gravitystorm.co.uk/shine/gps-recommendations !

I just read your recommendations there Andy, I agree, the garmin etrex units are quite good.
I've got an etrex vista HCx myself, with an 8GB micro usb card in it.
Contrary to what you've said, it does work fine in there - as it'd be an SDHC card.
Mind you, I don't think I'd be able to fill it up far enough to warrant getting anything in excess of 128MB.
- So just a note that they can take SDHC cards, whether they can actually use it all is a different matter.

Ignis: using the garmin units to put in waypoints for POIs can be quite annoying and slow, I recommend taking a digital camera with you and using JOSM to edit openstreetmap.

- Have fun!

Ignis - the HCX are good units - I bought mine two weeks ago and just getting up to speed with it - check out the Garmin webiste - there is new firmware available
for it ( version 3 ). A whole day of logging at 3 second intervals generates a file which is less then 1 M Byte so it will take a while to fill the card - read my entry here on how to upload maps from JOSM to your HCX which is really useful as it chows what has and what has not been mapped
