Building Canada 2020

於 2017年十一月 9日 由 jaronswainEnglish發表。

I’ll be participating in the Building Canada 2020 community-led initiative. The goal of this project is to map and digitize every building in Canada on OpenStreetMap by 2020. Creating a free publicly accessible, non-proprietary source of GIS information that stretches from coast to coast to coast.

There is an estimated 10-15 million buildings in Canada that need to be digitized in OpenStreetMap. Over 2 million Canadian buildings have already mapped!

What is exactly “community-led” about “Building Canada 2020”? I haven’t seen anything that indicates that it is something else than stats canada trying to obtain a source of cheap mechanical turks (and a couple of bystanders making some money from the project).

A number of Universities in Canada are taking part in this initiative. Each University is promoting an increased awareness for the OpenStreetMap platform. By getting students actively participating in crowdsourced mapping initiatives, we are building a stronger geography community. Students, faculty, and staff are all volunteering their time to contribute to this project.

Great response @jaronswain? Maybe think about reframing your question next time @SimonPoole? I think you could put forward your question in a way that doesn’t make pretty negative assumptions. You could assume that you don’t have sufficient information to make a judgement.

@mikelmaron jaronswain simply confirmed that it actually has nothing to do with the OSM community in Canada and that they are now investigating convenient other sources for mechanical turks.

Not to mention the involvement of your employer in this which you forget to mention.

@mikel, you should re-read the thread below where Julia C from MapBox writes to Talk-ca, saying that MapBox is collaborating with StatCan to engage Canadian universities to participate in the Building Canada 2020 project. [Talk-ca] Building Canada 2020 OSMGeoWeek Mapathons https://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk-ca/2017-October/008123.html

As it has been answered in the Thread, The OSM Canada community was not consulted, has other priorities and not the resources to cleanup the map afterwards.

It looks like we are forcing OSM-Canada community again. But no response yet from the community to support this.

If we are looking at the Missing Map Projects, a lot of marketing is done by the Partner organizations, projects started everywhere with not enough support from the organizations that initiate these projects. And the problems are left to the OSM community. If you are not convinced, go back to what has been done for Haiti in 2016, prior to the October Cyclone and the two weeks after the cyclone. Quite disturbing! Re-read the threads on the HOT list. We dont want that in Canada.

OSM is a community driven organization. Partner organizations should respect this, not force the hand to the communities for projects they planned without discussion with the community.

@PierZen mikel is simply just doing what he is paid for, no need to blame him for that, the problem are the excessively naive people that believe him.

@SimonPoole you’re out of line. If you need a punching bag, find an actual punching bag in real life, and spare your community from unfounded hostility.
