A meaningful journey in CTWS++

Posted by jjppsia on 22 October 2018 in English.

As we started CWTS++, we are given a task that we will map our very own neighborhood by the end of the semester. Before we started mapping our neighborhood, there is this application and a website that was introduced to us that can help us to map our neighborhood: Mapillary and Field papers. Mapillary is the street-level imagery platform that uses computer vision to fix the world’s maps. It connects all images across space and time to create 3D views of places and automatically extract map data from the imagery with computer vision. This data is available to anyone to make better maps and develop our cities and traffic environments. Then, Field papers is a web-based tool for easily creating a printable map atlas for anywhere in the world that you can print and add notes to– these tools helped me a lot. The first tool that I used is field paper. I printed a layout of own neighborhood, and then I noticed that there are some buildings that are not shown in the field paper. In short, the field paper is not updated. And then I decided to walk around my area and discovered many things that I never seen and been before. I saw new buildings/establishments, apartments, car wash, convenient stores, and etc. I was amazed when I saw these new things on my neighborhood because I realized that the last time I went to that place was a long time ago. And then, I decided to put the data that I’ve collected in my field paper. After that, I put the data in open street map where I put names in other buildings and I also added new buildings that were not included in my field paper before. Furthermore, after using the field paper for mapping my neighborhood, I decided to use the application Mapillary for me to collect images around my neighborhood. It helped me a lot in remembering the names of the buildings and especially in mapping my neighborhood. Walking and roaming around on my neighborhood with a goal in helping my neighborhood is fun and exciting. Even though my contribution to our community is not to much, at least I tried my best to contribute and to help other people.
