68986296 | over 6 years ago | Hello Gorbs. Please don't rename our subway lines without discussing the change with local osm mappers FIRST. Probably the best place to discuss this sort of thing would be the Talk-us mailing list. I'm inclined to revert this changeset. Thanks, jmapb |
68941982 | over 6 years ago | Hi dapanda2 -- Are you sure about including the football field along McDonald (Sid Luckman Field) as part of this park? The NYC Parks Dept website does not include it in the park's footprint ( https://www.nycgovparks.org/parks/friends-field/map -- it shows a smaller football field that overlaps the baseball diamonds) and the fact that it says "ERASMUS" makes me think it's owned by Erasmus Hall. |
68946051 | over 6 years ago | Hello Ragnix280 -- unfortunately this changeset has many errors and I had to revert it with changeset 68956252 . Thanks, jmapb. |
66429149 | over 6 years ago | I have surveyed and can't find any justifcation for these 50 mph speed limits. In fact, I found some 30 mph speed limit signs. Please reply indicating your sources for this data or I will revert this changeset. |

65603756 | over 6 years ago | Hi Tomer, what's the source of the name "Empire State Complex - 1"? Thanks. Jmapb |
67215664 | over 6 years ago | March has come and gone, and there's still no bar here: https://imgur.com/a/VOMRaQ5 I've changed this node from amenity=bar to construction:amenity=bar, because it appears that something *is* under construction in there. Check out the wiki page on "lifecycle prefix": osm.wiki/Lifecycle_prefix
Cheers, J |
68712887 | over 6 years ago | Hi apnaqua, I've reverted this changeset with changeset 68727452. Reasons:
If you can describe what sort of routing problems you were trying to address with this changeset, I might be able to help. Thanks, J |
68611059 | over 6 years ago | (Oh, PS, after you make address changes it may take a while for Nominatim to update.) |
68611059 | over 6 years ago | This is an interesting problem! I think it's caused by the fact that the value of the addr:street tag is "Fifth Avenue" while the official name of the street on the map is "5th Avenue". You'd think Nominatim would be smart enough to know that they're the same... until you consider that it would have to know alternate spelling rules in 50+ different languages, and know which ones are likely to apply in what regions. Solvable problems, for sure, but I don't think they're solved in Nominatim at this point. So, if I'm right, it searches for a match to "Fifth Avenue" and doesn't find it, so it just takes the closest street -- which is West 45th Street. (The Duane Reade node is slightly closer to West 45th Street.) That's my best guess. (The "highway:secondary" thing just indicates how major a road West 45th Street is -- it doesn't mean that it's a second road that's associated with the Duane Reade POI.) So I'd say try changing the addr:street from "Fifth Avenue" to "5th Avenue" and see if that fixes the problem. (Note that if the node is inside a building that itself has address tags, as this one does, you could also just remove all the address tags and it will inherit from the building it's in. This is a nice shortcut for POI nodes in single-address buildings.) Good luck, J |
68626909 | over 6 years ago | All fixed, don't worry about it a bit. We all make mistakes; I've probably made hundreds. See this Q&A for background:
Regarding disaster management -- I'm not really up on that, but maybe the Humanitarian OSM Team project would be of interest to you?

68626909 | over 6 years ago | Hi DMcCo, welcome to Openstreetmap! I'm a mapper active in NYC and I'm examining the changes you've made because you requested that they be reviewed. The bicycle shop you added as this node:
I'm going to go ahead and combine the two so the shop is not double-mapped. One question -- the opening hours you added are different from the ones listed for the building. What's your sources for these hours? Do they come from a sign on the premises? From a website? Let me know if you have any questions, I'm happy to assist or advise. Thanks, jmapb |
68611059 | over 6 years ago | Hi ibecze, welcome to Openstreetmap! Juts FYI, it's not generally not necessary to add city and state fields within NYC, as these can be inferred from the administrative boundaries and zip codes. Adding city and state (and even country) is not wrong per se -- but it saves time and space to leave them out, so that's why you'll see lots of addresses without them. Let me know if you have any questions -- I'm happy to assist or advise. Thanks, jmapb |
61404083 | over 6 years ago | I don't doubt the existence of the Moondog office, but if it isn't verifiable in person I do doubt its relevance to OSM. The problem with this sort of POI is that there's no way to visually tell if it's real, and still a going concern. Often websites stay up long after a business has closed. Public business records are out of date. When the office closes or moves, there will be no way for a mapper to know. (Having to check a website or call a phone number for updates is not a reasonable burden for a mapper.) Eventually the map gets cluttered with outdated information. I don't feel any need to address this node myself, but the next mapper who comes along and is unable to see any trace of it might assume it's gone and delete it. |
68262660 | over 6 years ago | Hi Chavaleiba, welcome to Openstreetmap! I'm a mapper active in NYC and noticed this change. If this school has moved to a new building, the correct way to show that is to find (or create) the new location on the map, and tag that with the school's info. In this case, you've changed the address of this building to Rutland Road, but the building itself hasn't moved -- it's still on Eastern Parkway, so it still needs to be tagged with the Eastern Parkway address. Let me know if you need help fixing this -- I'm happy to advise or assist. Thanks, jmapb |
68337889 | over 6 years ago | Hi bsmilovitch, and welcome to Openstreetmap! I'm a mapper active in NYC. You selected "review requested" on this changeset so I'm taking a look. You added the name "European Wax Center" to the building at 8510 5th Ave Brooklyn. However, I believe this business is likely only on the ground floor of this building, is that true? If the European Wax Center occupies the entire building, then it's fair to name that whole building European Wax Center. Otherwise it's better to create a node inside the building and tag that with the name European Wax Center. Regardless, it's also good to add tags with other details about the business. See for example: osm.org/node/5541293169 Let me know if you have any questions -- I'm happy to assist or advise. Thanks, jmapb |
68549379 | over 6 years ago | Hi nameverb, welcome to Openstreetmap! I'm a mapper active in Brooklyn and noticed this changeset adding the BPL branches. In two of them, you've added a node plus tagged the building itself. Generally it's better to pick one or the other -- if the library takes up the whole building, tag the building. If the library takes up part of the building, add a node inside the building near the library's entrance and tag that. Let me know if you have any questions -- I'm happy to advice or assist. Thanks, jmapb |
68525508 | over 6 years ago | Hi Cristian -- FYI, highway=service does not necessarily mean "service road" in the typical sense. It means something more like "access road" or "private road", ie, not part of the public roadway system. Driveways and parking aisles within parking lots considered service roads. See osm.wiki/Tag:highway%3Dservice Thanks, jmapb |
68387435 | over 6 years ago | Hi Airy14 and welcome to Openstreetmap! I'm a mapper active in NYC. You've set "review_requested" on this changeset so I'm trying to review it. I have many comments if you'd like to hear them, but the big one is -- please make smaller changsets! It's very hard to review a changeset that spans from Houston to NYC, even if there are no changes in between. The QA tools available are not capable of processing such a large area. Even just your changes within NYC are a lot. Especially as a new mapper, it's better to make only one or two changes per changeset. This will allow you to give better changeset descriptions to let others know why you're making the changes you are. And if something is wrong and needs to be addressed, it's much easier to fix. Thanks, Jmapb |
61404083 | over 6 years ago | The building in question (Ex-Lax building) is mainly residential with 2 obvious ground-floor businesses: the carpet warehouse and a barber shop that I left off because it looked like it might be out of business. My best guess is that Moondog Industries is someone running a business out of their apartment upstairs, but the neither the name nor the unit number match anything on the building's tenant list.
