No prob, thanks for writing back! The standard is -- *IF* all roads going through an intersection have to stop there, then using a single highway=stop on the intersection node is fine. Otherwise, we have to put them only on the roads that actually have a stop sign.

I looked at the map editor and it seems to present a choice when you're adding a stop sign, that it should either be a "all-way" stop or a "minor" stop. Unfortunately this confuses the issue, because adding that tag (all-way or minor) doesn't really work. It's the position of the node that matters most:
- A stop can't be "minor" unless it's mapped on the approaching road instead of on the intersection node.
- Likewise, a stop can't be can't be "all-way" unless it is mapped directly on the intersection node. (Technically you could represent an all-way stop by adding a separate stop for each approach instead of a single stop at the intersection, but that's not common.)

Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for your work & happy mapping, J

FYI I have removed the hotel tags from this building.

Hi -- the website for this real estate business seems to indicate that it's located in Saratoga Springs. What's the source of this address on Chase Road?

I've fixed this in changeset 72863247, see https://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/70227/highwaystop-stopminor-on-intersection

Hi, is this location correct? Just seems to be a deli in this building.

Hi MxxCon, wondering about this stop sign node... There's already a stop sign mapped on the Harden Street side of this intersection ( osm.org/node/5008464548 ) but from street level imagery ( https://www.bing.com/maps?cp=40.621597~-73.93478&lvl=17&dir=50.74&style=x&v=2&sV=1 ) it doesn't appear that there's any stop sign affecting Flatland Avenue.

Are you using different imagery?

Hi NogaDeutsch, welcome to OpenStreetMap and thanks for your edits.

I've reverted this particular changeset because the information you've added is incorrect. I don't know what your source for this information is (in the future please add a "source" field in your changesets or mention the data source in your changeset descriptions) but it's not precise enough to use for mapping. There is a Restoration Hardware store nearby, but the location you used is wrong.

Furthermore, adding a retail landuse is not the correct way to add a store to the map. It should be added as a shop, not a landuse.

I'm happy to advise if you have any questions.

Hi Daniel! Regarding osm.org/way/575640290 , from the Schermerhorn side it looks like this whole building is the Hilton, but the hotel actually only occupies parts of a few floors, with the rest being apartments and other businesses. That's why I mapped it as a node ( osm.org/node/5043356681 ).

Can you give an example?

Development's been pretty crazy in my neighborhood too -- it seemed like for a while I was demolishing little buildings and adding big construction sites every week. But I've never seen any trace of the developers themselves tagging the new buildings on OSM. They're less savy down in Brooklyn I guess.

71987206 about 6 years ago

Many buildings aren't that simple -- there's not necessarily a single "main" address.

Buildings that have only one address should be tagged with that address directly on the building area. Buildings with multiple addresses generally shouldn't get address tags on the building, but rather have their addresses indicated by address nodes placed inside the area (preferably near the entrance in question.) This is the standard implemented during the 2013 NYC building footprint and address import, and mappers here generally follow it.

These things are *not* well documented, so it's not surprising to find other approaches in use. And of course the imported data can be improved by survey. But you've left these buildings without any addresses at all, which isn't ideal.

For now I've restored the deleted address nodes (and the construction site) with changeset 72466673.

Regarding your work on the tunnel, it's great as far as I know. I hadn't noticed that the extra lane was there, and I don't know why it would have been mapped separately. (Maybe it had different restrictions at one point? You might want to discuss it with "rdnaskela23", the mapper who originally added it last year.) But please describe these sorts of major changes to the road network in your changeset comments so your fellow mappers will understand what you're doing and why.

Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions -- I'm not the most experienced mapper in NYC but I'm one of the more active ones at the moment.

Thanks for your work and happy mapping, J

Hi tylerchill, can you clarify what's happening in this changeset? Seems you deleted a lane from the Queens-Midtown Tunnel -- was there an extra lane mapped separately? I don't remember seeing one so I'm a little confused.

Also you deleted a construction landuse and a lot of address nodes -- I wonder if these may have been deleted by accident while working on the tunnel and LIE?

Thanks, Jason

Hi Timothy! In this changeset you renamed this pharmacy ( osm.org/node/5827855718 ) from "Walgreens Pharmacy" to "Rite Aid" and added various Rite Aid brand tags... presumably because it's inside a Rite Aid store ( osm.org/way/248238776 )?

The pharmacy is, in fact, operated by Walgreens. Its signed name is "Walgreens Pharmacy."

The Rite Aid store containing it is, in fact, a convenience store, not a chemist.

Thanks, Jason

I've done a partial revert in changeset 72271844.

72413108 about 6 years ago

Hi John, thanks for your contributions in NYC!

FYI the standard way of mapping building addresses here is:
- If the building has only one address, tag the building itself with that address.
- If the building has multiple addresses (on different streets or just with different numbers) leave the address tags off of the building and instead add each address to a node located inside the building perimeter.

This is the standard that was adopted during the 2013 building import so we try to stick with this style.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Happy mapping, Jason

Hi Emmanuel, what's the reason for tagging this address node with level 1? Is this address upstairs only?

71582747 about 6 years ago

There are many...

osm.org/node/2348727691
osm.org/node/2524539379
Cuisine changed from "coffee_shop;sandwich" to "coffee_shop". Different Starbucks have different food offerings which vary from store to store. These two I surveyed in person but the details can also be seen in the "Amenities" section of each location's web page. Setting the cuisine to "coffee_shop" is great for a Starbucks that does not have a cuisine tag, but if cuisine is already tagged and is not patently incorrect, please don't override it without surveying or discussing.

osm.org/node/6306935877
Takeaway tag changed from "only" to "yes". This location only offers takeaway.

osm.org/node/6177318443
osm.org/node/4193993228
osm.org/node/4194156006
osm.org/node/2568849012
These are pharmacies whose names were changed from, for example, "Rite Aid Pharmacy" to simply "Rite Aid". That might make sense, because the shop is much more than just a pharmacy. But each of these was pharmacy department mapped as a separate node inside a way representing the larger store. Reason being, they have different hours, different services, different names (eg the sign inside says "Rite Aid Pharmacy"). Sometimes these pharmacies also have different operators and contact information from the stores they're in. One of the ones you changed is a Wallgreens Pharmacy inside a Duane Reade. (osm.org/way/617474312). It's not a Walgreens store inside a Duane Reade, just the Wallgreens-branded pharmacy.

osm.org/node/5742310959
osm.org/node/5676615651
These are independent fast food restaurants that have been tagged with brand info for national chains. They're not related to those chains.

There may be more. One of the other problems here is that there are so many changes at once that it's hard to QA them properly, and impossible to know what's been changed based on actual knowledge and what's been "fixed" by iD.

Please use iD's validator with caution -- its suggestions are just that, suggestions, not gospel. Blindly trusting them will add incorrect (and remove correct) information from the map.

Thanks, Jason

71582747 about 6 years ago

Hi mapmap44, just noticed this changeset. I'm guessing that all of these changes were suggested by iD's validation feature, is that correct?

Thank you! I've updated the website and phone and removed some of the old irrelevant Holiday Inn tags.
