I really value OpenStreetMap for finding local places, navigating, and learning about my community. It’s important to me that the project is open and not owned by a company or government, so it reflects the community’s values.

My goals for contributing to this project are:

1. To solve the chicken-and-egg problem. I believe that more users will lead to more contributors, and the best way to get more users is to improve the data.

2. For fun and relaxation. Learning is fun, and this project makes me ask questions and look into information I wouldn’t normally learn about.

I’m very grateful for the amazing aerial and street images, free tools, and existing OSM data. Thanks to all contributors, past and present.

I want to add data that people in my community can use. This mainly includes my local area: 1) Metro Vancouver 2) British Columbia 3) Canada.

Some mapping details I’m more interested in than most contributors are:

• Curb, crossing, and sidewalk details
• Bike paths and crossings (I’m particular about mapping crossings where cyclists need to dismount)
• Business/amenity opening hours, websites, changing tables
• Bus stop details
• Name details like pronunciation, etymology, and non-English business names
• The Name Suggestion Index
• Wikidata links (subject:wikidata, architect:wikidata, building:wikidata)
• Building details like start date, architect, heritage:website, building:part, and more
• Power lines, poles, and substation equipment

There are a few areas I’m not interested in:

• Administrative boundaries
• Golf features

I have some future tasks I’d like to complete. If you’re interested in these too, let me know and maybe we can work together:

• Importing Metro Vancouver addresses
• Improving maxspeed:conditional values for school and playground zones. I think we can refine zone:traffic, zone:maxspeed, maxspeed:type, source:maxspeed, and other tags to better reflect regional rules and signs. I’ve updated the Default speed limits page but want to refine it more.
• Indigenous name pronunciations. I’ve had trouble finding IPA pronunciations.
