Changeset When Comment

I have only downgraded tertiary a few times when they don't have a ref and looks out of place. Like you have done here: osm.org/changeset/117586823
Also I have corrected a few major segments where the residential bypass was tagged as the main road.
I have and will continue upgrade many tracks and residential to unclassified, and tertiary when I find a ref.
If you find any conflicting changes, let me know. Cheers, Julien

Ok. It was definitely a mistake from my part. I should have contacted the original mapper first. If I recall, I didn't see any local signs showing there is a 4049 tertiary road here. Do you have any good online source to confirm these refs?

Hi Russ. which exact road segment you are talking about?

Hi cdhormann.

I am doing some map cleanup and adding missing tags in areas you have been mapping offroad.

Could you please kindly confirm:
- that all roads you added or modified in general are based on a ground survey/gps trace ?
- that you used tracktype values based on global wiki recommendation ? osm.wiki/Key:tracktype

Much appreciated,
Julien

Hi Spenc142,

What did you mean by using highway=tag+motor_vehicle=yes ?

That it would be passable by 4wd ? or motocross ?

e.g. osm.org/way/696205873/history

PS: doing some cleanup in Chiang Mai, your feedback will be appreciated ;)
Thanks,
Julien

Hi Johnny, the tags are conflicting. If the access to the road is restricted due to gates, highway=service may be more appropriate. Otherwise if the road is not suitable to motor vehicles (motor_vehicle=no), it should be tagged as highway=path+motorcycle=yes or highway=footway if only suitable by foot. highway=unclassified is reserved for minor roads frequently used for through traffic or to reach a specific destination (hotel, temple, attraction…)
For more info, please refer to osm.wiki/WikiProject_Thailand#Rough_guidelines_for_minor_highway_tag_decision-making_.28useful_in_most_cases.29

Hi Russ, thanks a lot for fixing the damage from Grab. I have spent countless hours doing the same in Chiang Mai province.
You will understand my frustration in this forum post: https://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?id=74519
If you have any other ideas on how to prevent this further, your feedback will be much appreciated.
And sorry if we didn't get on good terms earlier. We definitely both share the same intentions, we want to make better maps.
If you ever change your mind, happy to meet up in person in Chiang Mai. Cheers, Julien

Hi cdohrmann,
Thank you for your recent contributions,

a) Were these edits based on a GPS trace? If yes, would you mind please including source=GPS as an additional tag?
Or alternatively, upload your GPS traces as public so I can add later the missing tag myself? (osm.org/traces)

More info is available in this forum thread: https://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?id=73864

b) please be aware that the default Bing imagery layer is most of the time outdated and misaligned in Thailand.
Recommended alternatives are Maxar, and Mapbox, ESRI. I personally still use Bing to find visible forest paths but rely on Maxar for the most recent and accurate imagery.

More info in this forum thread: https://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?id=74230

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to respond to the forum links above, or you can send me a direct message at osm.org/message/new/cmoffroad,

Best,
Julien
