Need to edit but no aerial image

Postitas kruget kuupäeval 29. juuli 2012 – English.

i got this Bukit Gading Balaraja residential complex that i need to map, but Bing dont have the aerial imagery. Using gpx tracks will be painful and very inacurate… I wonder if there is any solution other than wait.

The location is around here: osm.org/go/tZ_OBSdz

Originally most parts of Germany have been mapped using GPS traces, so what?

@giggls, but.. but… now is 2012… haha.

But i found this “vespucci” thingy on android market, maybe it could make gpx mapping easier.

GPs mapping isn’t a bad thing, really. I’ve mapped a lot of neighbourhoods in my area; when satellite imagery became available 1-2 years later I had another look and tweaked my original work, but it didn’t make a big difference.

Besides:

  • You need to go on-site anyway, to survey street names and all the many, many details that are not visible on imagery.
  • Having a lot of traces available in a area is very important to make sure that the imagery is alingned correctly before tracing from it.
  • Imagery quality varys greatly, and since your area wasn’t deemed worthy of detailed imagery yet, chances are it won’t get the best-of-breed imagery when it eventually gets something.

You don’t need fancy software to gather traces, they are all provide the same basic needed functionality. Add some device to take a photo/video/audio, and you’re all set.

I’ve also mapped a whole year without images. It just prevents you from mapping outlines of buildings and areas (which make the rendering pretty), but it’s very feasible to add all features without outlines.

When images appear, the outlines will be added pretty fast anyway.

I’m not a big fan of Vespucci, at least for a phone, it’s not confortable to work on a small screen. I prefer annotated GPX tracks (e.g. with OSMtracker), and afterwards edit them on the PC.

@Vincent de Phily, yes, thank you for the advices. I’ll do those next time i go there. It is 100km away from my home, i do some business there and i always feel somewhat uncomfortable when my business place is not mapped… Especially when it is not navigable by my fancy android app :P

@Sanderd17, ok I’ll try that OSMtracker again. Few months ago i tried it but quite unstable on my samsung galaxy mini. Similar unstability happened with osmand. Btw, what is your favorite software to edit the tracks on PC?
