Alugu n OpenStreetMap OpenStreetMap

All, who contribute @ osm.org/user/liutas4x4/diary, remember about strange behavior of & message from JOSM I reported.

While absolutely nothing changed is Java, Chrome and JOSM, no one "update" or program was installed, everything goes OK - just fine downloading, updating and uploading.

So, it was a "silent ban", because of a bot-like activity from me: about 2000 nodes in few hours is not acceptable (it seems) by server rules.

So, a pro with handy tool (JOSM) can quickly go to "jail" without notice.
Thanks Lord, it was for a one week only.

2000 nodes is very small amount and can be created in a few minutes when drawing manually.

Let me be completely clear, there are absolutely no limits on how many edits somebody can make in a given period of time.

The only limits we have are on the rate at which data can be downloaded - there are no upload limits.

You probably just wanted to upload at a bad time. Maintaining heavy servers like the OSM ones cost money, sometimes they are too light and go down. If you just want to update at such a moment, it may look as you get blocked.

It's also possible that your internet provider was having issues.

But there is no way OSM would block you from uploading (unless you have done serious vandalism) or that JOSM would block you from doing bug reports.

The servers must have been grumpy and lazy for a week. Maybe they didn't like you.

If a single way that is to be uploaded has more than 2000 nodes the server will not take it. The way must be divided into segments of less than 2000 nodes and a relation created.
For an example of a large single entity see
osm.org/?lat=38.4006500244141&lon=-7.27157592773438&zoom=10
It is the Barragem de Alqueva/Embalse de Alqueva (Relation Number 1.464.895):
With a surface of 250 km2, the "Barragem de Alqueva" is today the biggest artificial lake in Europe.
The relation contains 275 islets, all objects have 48.996 nodes.
Its outer ways have a total length of 1.124 km (1.124.139,19 m)

Thanks for all.
May be 2000 nodes is not critical amount itself, but when it is a job for cardinal changing of complex shapes, dividing, for ex., one 1000 ha forest to 6 smaller ones and changing tags from forest to vineyards, it not "ordinary" event.
"In a few minutes" you can paste shape, but do not draw a real, exact path: say, 10 minutes has 600 seconds, so you must to mark a position of 3.3 nodes per second? Precisely? Tell it to your grandma after midnight, as old soldiers says. Raw pasting of simple (may be big ones, of course) shape, without clear tagging only.

Server maintaining idea sounds good. But only for me? I saw editions from others and there was no any signs of "server down for maintenance" on OSM page. Huh.

If you saw my previous post, there was no any problem on upload (after complete fail of first attempt), but it was on download.

On short exam of event (system logs), there was no real "timeout" on server connection - server responded in 120 ms.

So, something was happened when I trying to upload while something in objects I edited has been changed by someone: bug is in synchronizing at the upload time, which, late, cause something equivalent to ban.

BTW - it is not kind of arrogance from me. It is just ratiocinating.

Awennit n liutas4x4 di 27 August 2011 ɣef 09:22

dcp, I see it now. Am not sure about 2000 in single shape, but, may be, it was @ one moment while editing goes forward.

Your info about this lake is helpful: I will study this polygon and it's properties.

JOSM / OSM servers will limit the download of data, thus when I work on Grenoble for example which is highly built up, the maximum area I can download in one go is about 300m square.
All this means is that I must complete a number of downloads to download the town and merge the layers into one if I wish to use the OSM for a custom map - or just set JOSM to download to the same layer.

This is a chore but completely understandable given the amount of data this non commercial server must push backwards and forwards at any given time to the whole community.

I personally tell JOSM to upload in 100 segment chunks, thus a 1000 point upload will go up in 10 sequential uploads ( upload > Advanced tab ) , I have found this to be much more reliable than uploading in one go, especially with big change sets and or if I have inadvertently created conflicts which must be resolved

hope that helps some

Awennit n liutas4x4 di 29 August 2011 ɣef 14:34

Uploading of 100 per session sounds good: less loosing on conflict and adequate controlling a result. Nice idea.

About limit for area of my interest (for now) - nope. About 2-3 sq. km have about the same number of "ways" (polygons/objects) as near 1000 sq. m @ normal town in Europe.

As for today, I just do everything in "wiki gnome" regime. And have no any target to use OSM by myself. Now. May be later.

It helps, tnx.
