Do you think it would be possible to re-source those of the uploaded records to GNS that came from there originally with a simple script, so we can get an "untainted" import without loosing much of the data?

For at least a large part of the imported data, like springs, peaks and other natural phenomena, I can't see how these could be derived from google maps as this kind of data is not available there (or at least I failed to find it there).
Maybe that data is derived from the Geonet Names Server? Might be a good idea to check how much of the imported data is also available on GNS.

Some of the Wikipedia-Icons seem to be misplaced on the map; I had a closer look on the map of Oman, and while quite a few W-icons point to articles related to Oman, some are pointing to articles related to Spain. The coordinates displayed on those wikipedia-articles appear to be correct (i.e. located in Spain), though.

Hi, that is a really cool application. Two (minor?) problems I've seen:
- I can't get the Wikipedia-button to do anything (at least I don't see anything happen)
- Zooming to Vatican City ends up somewhere in West Africa

Apparently the original comment on that blog was not from an "OSM expert", but from someone who claims to be a "mapping professional" who suggests, that "your group" (meaning the OSM project) would need mapping professionals, because mapping is a complicated thing that can only be done by experts. Looking at OSM I think I disagree; obviously a lot can be done by enthusiasts without much prior knowledge.

Well, its about producing all kinds of maps actually. So everything that has a geographic location and that you (or I or whoever) want to see on a map should go into the database. The maps on the OpenStreetMap website are only a small subset of the maps created from the project data.

Well, gpx-files are actually cleartext xml files. I found it quite easy to edit them in a simple text editor.

The railway=station tag can be applied to a single node or to an area. If you use it for a node, that node does not need to be a member of the way representing the rail; it just marks the spot where the station name and icon should be rendered.
