I am seeing a lot newbies adding POIs and streetnames around the Philippines lately.

expressive changesets

Posted by maning on 31 July 2009 in English.

Lately, I've gotten bored with my changeset comments. The usual comments like "add new POI at road X" or "edit X footway" doesn't tell much about how I feel during editing sessions. In order to spice them up, I'm adding more expressive comments on my changesets.

Some are here:
1. A requested edit of my daughter
osm.org/browse/changeset/1983558

2. A mouth watering POI edit

3. A frustrated edit

Vacation offer: Map the Island of Boracay!

Posted by maning on 19 February 2009 in English.

Enthropia is making an offer to an openstreetmapper to gather information and map the whole island of Boracay. The map bounty: 25,000 Philippine Pesos.

Boracay in Openstreetmap is fairly complete, but as we say in OSM, “it’s a wiki, it’s never complete”.

My post on the announcement here: http://epsg4253.wordpress.com/2009/02/19/vacation-offer-map-the-island-of-boracay/

Nice updates for Metro Manila

Posted by maning on 6 November 2008 in English.

I have to say the recent Mapnik update for Metro manila is looking quite extensive!

- Paranaque and Las Pinas are getting more coverage (though a lot has no names)
- More buildings added
- North Caloocan gets some love (partly by me, need to add road names)
- We now have municipal/provincial boundaries (which of course can be improved further)
- Taytay from rally's data import
- More landuse added
- And oh! I really liked this one:
osm.org/?lat=14.7321&lon=120.8927&zoom=14&layers=B000FTF

At this rate, I can boldly say we can get the Metro Manila completed by the end of 2009! (At least for roads).
The black-holes that needs volunteers are Muntinlupa, Taguig, Pateros, Caloocan, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon.

But something really bugs me, why is Jolly Recreation Center so prominent in Osmarender?

Just got the news today from an OSM mapper that Metro Manila
Philippines is now in Google Mapmaker
See this:
http://www.google.com/mapmaker?gw=10&ll=14.555339,121.05835&spn=0.295086,0.31826&z=12

I have to admit that it is impressive in many parts (but not as
detailed as where I am currently mapping). However, we all know it
ain't free as in freedom.

So again here's my OSM love campaign. Calling all OSMer! Please join
us in an online mapping party for Metro Manila Philippines. A couple
of minutes (or hours or days) of your time editing using the Yahoo!
imagery is most welcome.

Using yahoo imagery, we want to complete a "first pass" edit to many
areas in the metropolis (yahoo imagery in Metro Manila is pretty much
dated by our guesstimate: 5 years old, but still very much useful).

Before editing please consider the following:
1. choose an area where there is virtually no edits (this way we don't
mess-up other contributions);
2. we have "mostly" completed major routes (motorway/truks/primary)
so the remaining tags would be mostly residential areas;
3. add the tag highway=road.

Also have a look at the
osm.wiki/index.php/Yahoo!_Aerial_Imagery#Problems_with_tracing_Yahoo
for tips.

map seeding Quezon City

Posted by maning on 1 May 2008 in English.

Today, I'm currenlty uploading ways covering Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. I believe I have covered almost 90% of the city.
The data came from an image map from the City government (with permission of course). I rectified the image and created a local wms
for JOSM. Most streets are unnamed and I hope local mappers would continue adding the names and other POIs.

cheers,
maning

For the past weeks I've been using public domain maps in mapping roads in Mindanao.
osm.org/user/maning/diary/951

Now most major roads are visible in the map.

osm.org/?lat=7.54&lon=125.3&zoom=8&layers=B0FT

3 tags are added: highway, FIXME and source.

I have a rough documentation on the process (will add more detail in time).
osm.wiki/index.php/OSM_Philippines_Data_Import

Overlaying ways on LANDSAT, I'm not really satisfied with the results some ways are way off by tens of meters. But the general geometry is OK. I will be editing further using landsat. Is there any way to cache landsat for offline JOSM editing?

cheers,

maning

Leaving Metro Manila OSM for a while

Posted by maning on 1 February 2008 in English.

For the next couple of weeks, I will be leaving OSM editing in Metro Manila
[osm.org/?lat=14.5947&lon=121.0324&zoom=12&layers=B0FT]
for a while. I believe there are a number of mappers who can continue this (11 mappers in Metro Manila already) [osm.org/user/maning].

I have posted last month in the OSM mailing list about public domain maps we can use for OSM. [http://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk/2008-January/022545.html]

These out-of-copyright maps roughly showing major highways around the country circa 1940s-50s. [http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2125/2233868748_a3614bc358.jpg?v=0]

I now have most of the sheets around Mindanao Island rectified and can access them with JOSM. For the meantime, I will focus my effort towards "seeding" Mindanao,
[osm.org/?lat=7.78&lon=124.53&zoom=8&layers=B0FT]
then work northward to Visayas and then back to Luzon. My rectification is by no means "uber" accurate so manual editing maybe needed by local mappers in these areas. My goal is to provide a skeletal network for others to continue mapping.

cheers,

maning
