First diary entry: notation, OSMTracker and iD editor.
نُشِر بواسطة momozza في 18 فبراير 2016 باللغة EnglishI have been adding data to my neighbourhoods in Brussels, Belgium (the one in which I grew up and the one in which I currently live). Mostly, I’ve been getting the information from my local knowledge, observing where osm is either inexact or incomplete and correction / adding it.
I have been careful to follow the notation as detailed in the wiki pages. I have found that it is heavily oriented towards English speakers, a possible barrier to further local participation. The title tool allows for different language inputs which is useful given the bilingual nature of Brussels.
Last week, I tried out the OSMTracker app for Android which I found very useful. The GPS on my phone isn’t very accurate but along with the images and notes, the track proved a good guide. The legibility of the notes wasn’t great and, combined with the inaccuracy of my GPS track, did mean that I relied on memory to complete the editing at home. This was fine for a short spin around the block in an area I knew well but might prove more complicated for longer distances in unfamiliar areas. I will look into more precise GPS options for this purpose.
All my editing has been done with the iD in-browser editor. Plotting the multiple points repeatedly proved quite time consuming (defining the use of a “bench” every time) but otherwise I found it a good and intuitive tool.

Well everything will have a ‘primary’ language… OSM chose to use British English. On the OSmwki it is possible to create translations of each key/value tag into any oth r language, thus people from Russia, Spain, japan can contribute. If you wan to contribute to the wiki translation .. feel free!
Repetitive entries … For your ‘bench’ example use the ‘copy and paste’ function of your computer .. select the first bench you entered .. press the control and C keys together and release, then move the cursor to the next bench location .. press control and V keys together an release. And you should have the new bench … repeat as many times as you like. Also works for ‘ways’ (buildings, sports pitches etc).

I did not know you could copy-paste in iD, good to know!
In the old fashioned Web editor Potlatch, it is possible to select more than one thing, and add tags to all of them at once. But for simple things Iike benches, I map these directly on the phone, using Osmand. For better geometry, it helps to have a satellite overlay.
But if you like OSMtracker, I believe you’ll find your data easier to process in JOSM.
On language : the Belgian community often uses English to bridge our language devide. As said above, translating documentation is certainly possible and a good idea.
