I’ve been a member for 17 days. Openstreetmap has been at the back of my mind for a few years, and now seemed like a right time to get involved. I relied on Openstreetmap when seeking where to live in Canberra a year ago. Annoyingly, there were a few alleys that weren’t marked out.

A year later, I’ve scratched that itch. Most of my changes have been in Waramanga and Fisher, as I live there or ride through regularly. It is winter time. Time indoors is spent well learning JOSM. My preferred program over Potlatch.

I haven’t yet mapped out the green space around Fisher/Waramanga. But have turned my attention to buildings at the Chifley shops and Woden Town Central. Today… I feel like I’m about done in those areas. But I’m not sure what to do next.

Nice work, and welcome. If you are restless, you can always map most anywhere in the world that has aerial imagery. Straighten a road here, add a lake there or a building. Add a rail. Again, welcome, and thanks for your work.

… but much, much better to map an area your know, by seeing what is really there now rather than what was there when the aerial imagery was made. You can still use the imagery to fix the positions of things. You also get the benefit of the signs you can see by visiting that don’t show up on the aerial imagery. It is surprising what you will find in an area you know.

Wow that’s some detailed mapping you’ve done there :)

Next time I’m in Canberra I’ll know just where to go if I need a dentist (or seven)!

There’s always plenty of additions that can be added to the map.

You could concentrate more around Woden Valley, such as:

Bus routes (they’re relations, and show up red, eg osm.org/?lat=-35.34863&lon=149.09106&zoom=15&layers=T )

More metadata for shops, such as phone numbers, websites, email address. - It’ll eventually show up in here: http://www.openlinkmap.org/?zoom=15&lat=-35.34752&lon=149.09171&layers=BFTTT

If you’re really bored you can add firehydrants (I’m guilty of adding a few of these), house numbers, and better yet, post boxe[s n].

Or, you can explore and enhance neighbouring suburbs. Though as it’s rather cool in Melbourne (and by by extension Canberra) probably best to do some tracing from Bing somewhere.

Remember there’s heaps of stuff you can tag, not just those that are in JOSM: osm.wiki/Map_Features

Happy mapping :D

For me, all houses deserve a point (and even an outline). So there is still a lot of work in your area.

Tagging houses with their housenumbers is very handy when you use a search function in a navigation device (certainly for longer streets).

Also, for companies, shops and amenities, add their opening hours and contact information. It’s very handy when you’re on the way and want to know which butcher is still open, or you want to pan for restaurants and call them immediately from the OSM data. (If you want an app that can do this, try OsmAnd on an Android).

Oh, and don’t forget the opening_hours tag. osm.wiki/Key:opening_hours

There’s a nice JOSM opening hours editor that can take most of the hard work out of it here: osm.wiki/JOSM/Plugins/OpeningHoursEditor

I use it a lot to check if hardware / electronics stores are open on weekends / late nights :)
