Woodlands Historic park, Melbourne, Australia

Posted by petdr on 6 October 2008 in English. Last updated on 7 October 2008.

Went for another bike ride on the weekend.

This time along the Monee ponds creek until somerton road and then across to Woodlands Historic Park. Made a few bad decisions in the park and ended up inside an electrified fence on my road bike following the fence line over some pretty rough ground until I found another gate to let me out.

Anyway did some of the other tracks in the park using the yahoo imagery. Want to head back out there with my mtb and get all of the tracks and fences in the park.

Organ Pipes National Park

Posted by petdr on 28 September 2008 in English.

Did a nice walk around the Organ Pipes National Park, just north of Melbourne. The tessellated pavement is definitely worth seeing. A very unusual rock-formation which one can scamper over.

Anyway now it's added to the map, plus a fair bit of jacksons creek traced from the yahoo imagery.

Ingliston Gorge

Posted by petdr on 13 September 2008 in English.

We did a small walk around Ingliston Gorge, very pleasant walk but only 4km long. Perfect if walking with a pregnant lady.

Managed to mark the trail and get some of the missing roads to get there. Love the fact that someone will eventually pull out there gps there and find that someone has already marked the walking track.

Prefer the Weribee Gorge walk which is just north of this walk. There you can go for in a swim in the Weribee river during the walk.

Finally managed to trace some more walking trails around the 3 Sisters Katoomba.

As noted by the person who previously did some of these trails, it would be nice to redo them with a high res GPS. The Giants Stepwalk ended at least 50 m out at the bottom, and the new section around Leura falls is just a mess, so still trying to work out how to trace that one.

Did manage to accurately place Jenolan Caves though.

JOSM simplify way hint

Posted by petdr on 4 May 2008 in English.

If you use the simplify way plugin for josm. Then if you add the parameter simplify-way.max-error to the advanced preferences you can adjust how much the way is simplified.

I use 250 to simplify ways which are mountain bike and bush walking tracks.

Also despite the warning about restarting josm, this is not required for adjusting the value of this preference.

OSM and garmin

Posted by petdr on 21 November 2007 in English.

After discovering that SteveZ kindly converts the weekly planet.osm into garmin images which can be uploaded to a garmin gps I couldn't wait to see my latest updates to OSM on my own little GPS.

One of the nice things about this is that you can easily see if a street has been mapped before or not, which makes it easy to add new streets to your route and add them to OSM when you get home.

Anyway after riding home from work and deciding to do a few more k's I noticed that that the end of Arden St hadn't been mapped accroding to my GPS. So I rode various loops around all the streets there to record them on my GPS.

Only to get home to find that they all existed. Seems like BlueMM had mapped them all in the last week.

Oh well at least it was fun riding around a new bit of Melbourne.
