Beginners Problems uploading maps in Windows 7 64-bit
Posted by pohotukawa on 27 December 2009 in German (Deutsch).Hello
I am new to this site.
I got a Garmin Vista HCx for christmas -probably to be out of the way in summer - and tzry to first upload local maps onto my computer and thence to my Garmin and fail miserably.
Use a new computer with Windows 7, upload the zipped file, use the recommended unzipper in its 64-bit version, click "Install with classic type file.bat", get to see the old MS-DOS like background, click a key and be prompted the error-message: "mistake: access dnied".
Any bright ideas to solve that problem?
For the procedure I had de-activated both Windows Defender and my resident Firewall and Anti-Virus software and was off the net.

I'm not quite shure what you want - install some OSM map on your Garmin? I do as follows: Download a prebuilt map file - e.g. http://osm.arndnet.de/20091223/gmapsupp.img.zip, unzip it, connect the Garmin to the computer, select USB mass storage mode (Einstellungen -> Schnittstelle -> Verbinden), open the folder "garmin" on the micro sd card, copy the map file img to it, disconnect the GPS, restart it - map can be used.

Following on from that - I have a Garmin Legend HCX. Pre built maps can be downloaded from Cloudmade for your Garmin ( see the European pre built maps here - http://downloads.cloudmade.com/europe#breadcrumbs ).
Uploading maps to Garmins which do not have a MicroSD card slot ( such as the Legend HCX ) is a little more detailed. You will need an IMG file. Download from Cloudmade, or download parts of the map that you need using JOSM, Merge all the areas into one layer, save the layer as an OSM file ef test_map.osm.
You now need to convert the test_map.osm file into an IMG file. To do this use MKGMAP ( http://www.mkgmap.org.uk/snapshots/ )
so.....
java -jar mkgmap.jar --ignore-osm-bounds test_map.osm
should create a file by default called 63240001.img - see the wiki for more info
( osm.wiki/index.php/Mkgmap )
Now you have to use 'Sendmap' to send the IMG file to the Garmin
Yes this is all a little tricky ( and the process for Garmins with the Micro SD card is a lot easier and mot limited by internal memory issues ) but once you get it to work it is quite fun
good luck and mail me directly if you need more assistance
