O IBGE disponibilizou uma lista dos municípios que tiveram seus nomes atualizados nas bases geográficas e estatísticas do instituto, como a Infraestrutura Nacional de Dados Espaciais (INDE) e o Banco de Tabelas Estatísticas (Sidra). As atualizações da versão 2018 dos Topônimos Legais dos Municípios Brasileiros foram para Santa Maria da Boa Vista (PE), São Bento do Una (PE), São José do Belmonte (PE), São Lourenço da Mata (PE), São Luiz do Paraitinga (SP) e Serrita (PE).
Na lista também é possível ver os ajustes feitos pelo IBGE em 2017, como é o caso de Santarém (PB), que passou a se chamar Joca Claudino, e outras situações em que houve acréscimos no nome, como em Embu (SP), que se tornou Embu das Artes. Há, ainda, mudanças meramente ortográficas, como em Parati (RJ), alterado para Paraty, o que atendeu uma antiga reivindicação dos moradores da cidade.
Tudo começou após mudanças nas regras ortográficas da língua portuguesa no Brasil terem determinado a substituição do “y” por “i” em palavras como Paraty, que então passou a figurar nos mapas como Parati. Revoltados com a alteração, os paratienses se mobilizaram para que o “y” retomasse seu devido lugar na grafia do nome da cidade, o que só ocorreu depois da aprovação de uma lei pela Câmara de Vereadores, em 2007.
Histórias como essa indicam que não é por acaso que o nome de um lugar é escrito de uma determinada maneira. É o que vai mostrar a reportagem sobre “nomes geográficos” na próxima edição da Retratos – a revista do IBGE.

The IBGE made available a list of the municipalities that had their names updated in the geographic bases and statistics of the institute, such as the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (INDE) and the Bank of Statistical Tables (Sidra). The updates of the 2018 version of the Legal Toponyms of the Brazilian Municipalities went to Santa Maria da Boa Vista (PE), São Bento do Una (PE), São José do Belmonte (PE), São Lourenço da Mata (PE), São Luiz do Paraitinga (SP) and Serrita (PE).
In the list it is also possible to see the adjustments made by IBGE in 2017, such as Santarém (PB), which was renamed Joca Claudino, and other situations in which there were additions in the name, such as Embu (SP), which became Embu of the Arts. There are also merely orthographic changes, as in Parati (RJ), changed to Paraty, which met an old claim of the residents of the city.
It all started after changes in the orthographic rules of the Portuguese language in Brazil have determined the substitution of “y” for “i” in words like Paraty, which then came to appear on maps as Parati. Revolting with the amendment, the Partizans mobilized for the “y” to return to its proper place in the spelling of the name of the city, which only occurred after the approval of a law by the City Council in 2007.
Stories like this indicate that it is no coincidence that the name of a place is written in a certain way. This is what the report on “geographical names” will show in the next edition of Portraits - the IBGE magazine.
