I am finding a lot of these. It may be that I am misunderstanding things. If you look at the ITO Map layer for schools, it shows a lot of schools that do not have names attached. But actually what I am seeing is that there is a school that has been defined as a point and there is a lot of info on that, such as the name and gnis codes and such, and then there is an area and it has amenity=school and absolutely nothing else on it.
I am thinking that it is better to have the area so I have been transferring the information from the point to the area and deleting the point. But is this right?
And if so, is there an easier way to copy all of the values from one thing (the point) and apply all those values to another thing (the area)? It seems that there should be some magic shift-elbow-click operation that does this. Or maybe not.
And I am using iD and maybe I need to step up to a more capable editor. We will see.

I have the schools as areas, amenity = school all the name and main tags are added to this area. then inside the area I tag the building as building = school. If you want an example look at this one, feel free to open it up in your editor to see how it is tagged, if your editor isn’t up to it you can try getting your feet wet in JOSM.

They should not be mapped as both a node and an area. See One feature, one OSM element mapping guidelines. So yes the correct thing to do would be to move all tags off the node onto the area, and delete the node.
I hunted down this for you. In iD you can apparently select the area and the point, then use the “Merge” (+) operation
In JOSM the Paste Tags action lets you do it. In Potlatch I think you can copy tags from the last selection.

The OSM example has the school as an area around the various school buildings. Each building should be tagged building=school.
Certainly in the warmer US states you have a few buildings for sets of classrooms, offices, gyms. In colder climates they tend to have only one building.
So the area around the buildings does seem to fit best in warmer climates.

I very commonly find area + point mapping, at least in older data. I make an a fair amount of effort to fix this with KeepRight’s redundant tags feature.
It would be interesting to know if the placement of a school icon in the middle of the area has cut down on this kind of mapping for iD users.

In case it wasn’t clear, you can select both the area and the point while holding down Shift. Clicking the merge (+) button that appears copies all the tags from the point to the area and deletes the point.

The example on the amenity=school page mentioned above is pretty good, but it isn’t clear where to put the address tags. I suspect the area that is tagged amenity=school is the most logical, especially where a single school has multiple buildings.
