Laptop logging

Posted by slashme on 6 March 2010 in English.

Does anyone here use a Linux laptop to record and use gps data? What software do you use and how? Any tips and tricks?

I have never used this myself, but there is a Live GPS plugin for josm.

I started doing OSM with an early eeepc, a very small device, running Mandriva linux. As I record while cycling, the laptop is used at home hence not for recording. I download from the navigps using gpsbabel and the command line, into gpx format then edit and upload using merkaartor. Why merkaartor, because the rest of my system is a KDE4 desktop and therefore uses the same underlying toolkit, saving memory and space.

You need to ensure you are running the right versions of programs - these are things that linux distributions often don't keep fully up to date, so if you want something that is this month's version not last year's, you have to compile yourself, which is pretty easy but scary at first.

Thanks guys - I'll probably keep using my phone for logging while cycling, but the laptop might come in handy for driving. I've had the most success so far with LiveGPS, but I'll keep looking for other options.

- EEE701 with ubuntu 9.10 on an 8GB SDCard.
- BU-353 USB GPS dongle (£25)

Note: You MUST use the -b option to start gpsd or you "break" this dongle.
You need a windows computer to "unbreak" it. To reset it, see this page:
