Import Data?

Posted by sliver on 26 March 2010 in English.

Work for a county government. Have lots of data avaialble. Is it possible to import places of interest on a bulk scale? We have up-to-date data that I would be happy to load if possible. Also have a live street centerline which OpenStreetMap could use.

Have a look at osm.wiki/Importing_Government_Data for some ideas. Or you can use the mailing lists (osm.wiki/Mailing_lists) if you require specific help.

Hi silver, this is great news!

If you are relatively new to openstreetmap it is best not to try a massive bulk upload on your own. A lot of things can go wrong...

I'm sure your data is very valuable for this project! Best would be to write to the talk mailing list or post on the forum! Please give some details on what region your data covers and maybe give a sample.

If the region has already good coverage in osm, some manual work is required, because we don't like to have duplicate POIs in the database.

In the end it might be a good solution to convert your data to the osm format (so it can be opened, checked and uploaded with JOSM), to split it in small digestible chunks and to keep it downloadable somewhere, so all users can work on it.

If this is too much work for you, I'm sure others are glad to help out.

Sebastian
