Or go back and resurvey the area. Quite often you need to back to an area a few times to be able to get all the information correctly into OSM.

I just use what is on the ground.

I prefer JOSM for longer mapping sessions, or using the photo integration.

I use Potlatch for small minor changes or the satellite imagery.

If you go to http://informationfreeway.org/ and go to zoom level 12, you can force a re-render of the tile that you are looking for, by hovering over the tile and then pressing the r button.

If you are walking, placing the GPS in the top pocket of a rucksack facing upwards makes a big difference as it doesn't move around as much.

uh Google maps actually has a canal on it? It hasn't had any of the canals I've mapped.

I often find that shortly after turning on my GPS, the accuracy can be wildly out. I sometimes find some wide random variations, where the trace just goes out. Taking the trace 2 or 3 times at least 6 hours apart (to allow the satellites to move) and comparing them, could help allow you to verify if the first trace was correct.

If there are other people collecting traces in your area, you may be able to use their traces, or use the layout of the current data to add names to it.

Is there any particular reason that you can't load the photos into JOSM?

How about using layer=-5 for the university campus layer?

The OSM diary doesn't use wiki syntax.
