Understanding a Garmin USA Map Download

Арахецна solarblast 7 April 2010, мотт: English

I selected a number of California tiles from the map, and requested a build my map. The question is now what to do with the download of files to put the map on my Garmin?

There are four osm_routable files: mapsource, gmapsupp, roadtrip and tiles.
Three are zip,and mapsource is an exe. I would think one of them is what I
need to place on my nuvi. Perhaps mapsource prepares the img file.
All of the files are less than 10M?

Unzip the gmapsupp
Put the resulting .img on your Garmin or an SD card in the Garmin folder.
You should now be able to select your add-on map from the map setup screen on your Garmin.

Thanks. I'll try it out. What are the other zip files and the exe file for? Are these files documented somewhere?

Assuming you are talking about this website: http://garmin.na1400.info/routable.php

It says on that page;
This service generates four different configurations of your personal map:
* Installer for Garmin MapSource (Windows).
* Installer for Garmin RoadTrip (Mac OSX)
* Combined image for direct manual placement on the GPS device (gmapsupp.img)
* A zip file just containing all the Garmin map tiles as selected on this website. This is useful for Linux users (e.g. Qlandkarte)

So these files are useful if you want to view the map on your PC, in different software.

Yes, the link you mention.

I'm very new to this. I use Win7. I would think the img file is sufficient for me. What does MapSource do that a manual install wouldn't do?

The Calif. img file I downloaded is about 8G. My 200 nuvi has a capacity of 1G. It has a USA map supplied with it of size 0.8G. Apparently, the supplied map has a much different make up than the newly generated map of Calif. only. Before running out and buying a 10G, if it exists, SD, how do I proceed to either get this Calif map smaller, or even getting a similar up to date USA map of a size near 0.8G.

BTW, the map on the Garmin is called gmapbmap.img there is another file similarly named as gmapbmap.sum. The Calif map is gmapsupp.img. Is there some explanation of how what is happening on this site corresponds to what Garmin generates?

Mapsource lets you view the maps on your PC. You can do stuff like plot waypoints and routes, then send them to your Garmin. Or download the tracklog from your Garmin and view it on a map, plus you can split/join/edit tracks. Then save it as GPX format, and upload it to OSM if you want.

So I find it very useful for doing this sort of thing, using it with my eTrex. I'm not sure if your Nuvi supports uploading/downloading waypoints etc?

Also, you can select maps and send it the Garmin. So you could download OSM maps for the whole of the USA etc, then install into MapSource. Then you can just select some of those, and send them to your Garmin if you don't have much space on it.

Though note MapSource usually included with the GPS device, or with maps you buy from Garmin. Updated versions of MapSource are available to download for free from Garmin, but they won't install unless you have a previous version installed. Unless you use a bit of workaround, see the instructions here: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/01/31/download-garmin-mapsource-for-free-and-install-without-media/

As for the file sizes you mention, I think they are a bit mixed up. I suspect you mean 8MB, not GB. Though I think it would be easiest to just buy a 2GB or 4GB SD card, they are pretty cheap now. Then you can copy the OSM maps onto that, and not affect the preinstalled Garmin maps.

Thanks. I suspect my now extinct nuvi does not have waypoints and tracks. Probably restricted to streets and roads.

Yes, 8G. I would hope that if I just install a new img file, I wouldn't have to worry about the audio being accurate. Is there a book that gets into the software elements (making and understanding) of maps and the Garmin?

Free?! Whenever I've contacted them, they talk about bucks. I'll check out the link you mentioned. I'll for MapSource on the nuvi. When you say previous version, do you mean of MapSource of the img file? I'm quite surprised at all the general user goodies available.
