Understanding a Garmin USA Map Download

Thanks. I suspect my now extinct nuvi does not have waypoints and tracks. Probably restricted to streets and roads.

Yes, 8G. I would hope that if I just install a new img file, I wouldn't have to worry about the audio being accurate. Is there a book that gets into the software elements (making and understanding) of maps and the Garmin?

Free?! Whenever I've contacted them, they talk about bucks. I'll check out the link you mentioned. I'll for MapSource on the nuvi. When you say previous version, do you mean of MapSource of the img file? I'm quite surprised at all the general user goodies available.

Yes, the link you mention.

I'm very new to this. I use Win7. I would think the img file is sufficient for me. What does MapSource do that a manual install wouldn't do?

The Calif. img file I downloaded is about 8G. My 200 nuvi has a capacity of 1G. It has a USA map supplied with it of size 0.8G. Apparently, the supplied map has a much different make up than the newly generated map of Calif. only. Before running out and buying a 10G, if it exists, SD, how do I proceed to either get this Calif map smaller, or even getting a similar up to date USA map of a size near 0.8G.

BTW, the map on the Garmin is called gmapbmap.img there is another file similarly named as gmapbmap.sum. The Calif map is gmapsupp.img. Is there some explanation of how what is happening on this site corresponds to what Garmin generates?

Thanks. I'll try it out. What are the other zip files and the exe file for? Are these files documented somewhere?
