This is a great tutorial, it summarises a lot of techniques that would otherwise take months to discover. Thank you for writing it.

I just wanted to draw attention to four related factors - image offsets, and the National Library of Scotland out-of-copyright maps, postcodes and back gardens.

1. The current Bing imagery is great, but it doesn’t necessarily end up in the right place - it appears to be ‘off by a couple of meters in my area. If you don’t have the equipment necessary to figure out the offset accurately, you might find it useful to turn on the OS Opendata tiles, and use it as a baseline for aligning the Bing imagery and any other imagery you find useful. Which brings me to two other useful layers for this noble housemapping mission…
2. High resolution historic (out of copyright) OS map has become available as a JOSM imagery layer. It shows very clear house and garden outlines, at least for London. Thanks to user rskedgell https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/rskedgell for pointing it out. 4. If, like me, you are the sort of person who likes to complete the extrusions on classic L-shaped houses, AND fill in back gardens (which can take up a lot of space); you might also find the balloon Josm plugin useful - available here - https://github.com/ubipo/shrinkwrap. (gardens - leisure=garden; garden:type=residential, access=private).

I enjoy this sort of thing, especially for the several oddly-shaped modern buildings in my area. Like user googlenaut says, kendzi doesn’t work very well unless you have a building relation set up, with all the parts inside. But F4 and OSM Buildings don’t always seem to need it.

I too will eventually get to some institutions I attended; though I understand two of the three have been demolished and rebuilt since my day.

@alexkemp: Fair enough, re: moving to HU. But I suspect BT will take longer, so do feel free to chip in any time. You could possibly avoid collisions by starting at the other end of the table - with the BT94s, etc.

I too am looking at adding some schools to NI. The charts and tables here https://osm.mathmos.net/schools/progress/BT/ are naturally very helpful. I recently (mostly) finished the E and EC postcodes, and NI has the lowest completion rate of what’s left.

I sorted by Postcode and began working my way down it yesterday. I’ve only managed a handful so far; but I noticed that some of them are closed (according to aerial photography, one of those has been built over by housing).

You’ll probably encounter some Irish language schools too (in the sense of schools where Irish is the everyday language used). I’ve added the tag language:ga=main to these, but perhaps there is something better. There were two of them in my first batch.

Have you noticed whether an external device like this one saves battery use on the smartphone? Does bluetooth on the smartphone take less power than the built-in GPS receiver?

There’s also this source now available in some areas (haven’t tried Dublin): Bing “StreetSide”, which is like a blurier version of Google StreetView, but it is available for OSM.

If you do go for JOSM, the Terracer plugin is an absolute lifesaver for splitting rowhouses (A.K.A “terraces”) into the individual dwellings.

You could also get hold of the StreetComplete app for your smartphone. It shows a map with markers where there is some missing data - it displays markers for missing house/building numbers. You can add them on-screen when you’re out and about.

You can still mark tiles as dirty if you can discover their URL. The new right-mouse menu on osm.org doesn’t prevent this, but it just make it more difficult.

In Firefox, you can find the URL for any displayed tile in the Page Info / Media panel. Then you can copy and paste it into a new tab with the “/dirty” appended.

I have noticed doubled-up hotels in Maps.me too. They look like they have been imported directly into Maps.me from Bookings.com as some sort of money-getting scheme. They are not editable in Maps.me, but they do not appear in OSM’s original data.

Think of them as unskippable adverts.

If you have an Android phone, you can install StreetComplete, which can prompt you to complete details from your immediate surroundings. It has a number of quests active at the moment - building levels, roof types, business opening hours, bus-stop types, road surface types, and street numbers.
