125634161 | almost 3 years ago | Then the question would be, what IS the "main location"? That's quite subjective and also hard to verify. On some ferries/routes the majority of people enter/exit the ship on foot via the gangways (if you count in the service personal, which is a few hundred people on night ferries, that's even more common - but presumably they seldom use a map to find their ways :). I have used probably more than a dozen of different ferry routes without ever sitting in a passenger car (but entered mostly on foot, in busses and even trains). If you meant to have the ferry terminal node "floating" in the water without *any* connection to the shore then you break routing completely. That's definitely not the way to go :) IMHO we just need to make sure that data users can clearly distinguish between static and intermittent parts of the ramps/bridges and make this common practice. |
125634161 | almost 3 years ago | Hi, I am also not aware of any discussion and the wiki so far does not give any hints, so I tried to come up with something that has the least downsides without breaking too many things but it is of course not ideal - mostly because data users don't care about the intermittent=yes and thus the ways "on" the ferries from the shore till the amenity POI are interpreted as actual static bridges. I documented my thoughts concurrently to this edit on the discussion site of the ferry relation: osm.wiki/Talk:Tag:route%3Dferry#Mapping_separate_gangways/loading_bays_for_vehicles_and_passengers However, it's very seldom that I have seen really good discussions happening in the wiki so I wouldn't hold my breath for a quick solution. Nevertheless please don't hesitate to add your view there (it certainly will be seen by more people eventually than a discussion here). Alternatives to the wiki would be for example the tagging mailing list (https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/tagging) or probably any other community bubble with experiences mappers that can give any feedback. |
