why can't i use the node as a value...why does it have to be a 'way'?

Huh? The flickr blog (here http://code.flickr.com/blog/2009/09/28/thats-maybe-a-bit-too-dorky-even-for-us/) itself says:
That means you can subscribe to a feed of all the (public) photos tagged with osm:way= or osm:node=...

Yep, you can use both osm:node and osm:way... e.g., http://www.flickr.com/photos/londondan/46551630/

I notice you've added some things to the database (e.g. a 1950s postman and boring park) that don't look like they should be there... please stick to objects that exist in the real world when making changes.
