When driving with navigation, e.g. by NavMii (formerly NavFree), it may be good to know where construction sites are but is is no good idea to add them to the standard street map. OpenStreetMap should show the stable net of streets not temporary deviations, at least not with the same type than the normal road. If it should be possible to add deviations to the street map they should be of a separate type so the navigation software can discover that.
I just removed the deviation at the Schönbuch Tunnel when driving from Stuttgart to Singen because this side of the tunnel maintenance is finished already for some months. Still the navigation tells the driver to hold to the left to drive through the opposite tunnel.
I did not add the deviation for the opposite side as again someone would have to remove it when finished.
While correcting some other mistakes I encountered that it would make sense to be able to mark roundabouts as such, because sometimes, I suppose based on the fact whether the line has been converted to a circle or not, the navigation software discovers a roundabout and sometimes it does not and tells you to turn right and left to enter and leave it which can be quite confusing.
Finally I found that you can mark buildings as restaurants or cafes but not as hotels.

Whatch out when deciding whether roadworks and deviations should or shouldn’t be mapped. It depends on a few criterias (mainly the expected duration of the change), but not everybody agrees on where to draw the line. At least get in touch with the contributor who added something that you think is too temporary.
Regarding buildings as hotels, you absolutely can, there’s no difference with cafés/restaurants in that respect. What makes you think you can’t ?

Personally I think it depends on whether the construction is for repairs/maintenance and the road will eventually revert back to its original layout, or if its building/realigning the highway and the eventual result will be different. For the first case, the map should be left alone. In the second case, there is no harm in gradually updating the map with the developments so that when the work is finished, the map is already ready with the new layout.

@spark: I agree, but in this case it was obvious that it was for maintenance although it took several months.
@Vincent: In this case it was a temporary deviation of one of the lanes through the tunnel that was for the opposite direction. It is obvious that this will not be a persistent change although these maintenance works may last some time. But they happen recurringly and so it does not make sense to re-route one lane to the opposite side and cut the original route consisting of 2 lanes and reduce the part in the tunnel to one lane.
With the web-based editor I used it did not offer a building type hotel. At least I did not see it.

For roadworks, I think there are better feeds and standards to use to consume data. IE: https://github.com/OKFNau/open-council-data/issues/27 is a similar kind of discussion being had in Australia, and there’s some efforts in http://www.open511.org/ that look really quite useful.
Building an aggregator that consumes all of the various council feeds in that format and turns them into spatial data would be a handy tool to have; but wouldn’t fit well with OSM due to how often it changes.

Buildings .. and shops / amenities…
Tagging buildings can be done .. I like to tag the area of their foundations (the ‘footprint’). The tags for buildings reflect their architecture - the physical appearance from the outside (what is ‘on the ground’).
The function of what goes on inside in terms of shops/amenities is tagged differently - best to read as an overview osm.wiki/Shops Shops usually reside inside a building=retail …

I think you can tag buildings as hotels - have a look at this page osm.wiki/Tag:tourism%3Dhotel

For short term situations is use the temporary tagging scheme (just a proposal and is not yet supported by data consumers but I consider it quite useful osm.wiki/Proposed_features/temporary) Even if you forget to delete the tag again, it won’t cause much harm. If there is not end_date set every data consumer could still assume that it’s only temporary and that it is unlikly that the feature is still acitve after two month [consumers could set timelimit based on length or other parameters] (Editors could give a warning if the time limit is exceeded) If there are construction sites that last for more than one month I draw them as such.
I’ve read that the developer version of OSMAnd is going to have daily updates.
