Good Day,

I must say that this is a real kick-ass website for hobbyist and navigation hunter like me, and I would like to ask if someone can give me a link or a detailed way of adding a MAP, based on my location.

I have tried adding the map, I saw the new screen, I have a pen and I guess it's use for drawing? so How I will proceed now? do i need to have any extra software or Hardware device so that I can add new maps?

just so let me know guys. thanks a lot!

Hi vlodia, good to see you here!

It's great that you want to contribute maps. A good starting point is the Beginners Guide on the wiki: osm.wiki/index.php/Beginners%27_Guide

Short guide is to zoom into a part of the map on the main page and then click on the 'edit' button on the top of the screen. You should be able to draw new roads and add features from there.

Be careful about the copyright licence of any maps you want to add. Rule of thumb, anything you make yourself is OK, but copying from google maps or a paper map is most likely not OK.

Hi vlodia,

You can't add maps, you can just add points, streets and areas.

Before beginning to map you have to answer two questions:

1. Where do you come from?

Some big cities have aerial photos, other cities don't. If you live in a city without aerial photos, you have to rely on your GPS logger, otherwise you can skip the second question.

2. Do you have a GPS logger?

Without a GPS logger, you can only change existing roads. With a GPS logger, you can upload tracks. These tracks are shown as thin blue lines. They mark the edges where roads start and end. If you know where these points are, you can add new streets, cycleways, footpathes, rivers and forests.

From my experience, I know it is a little bit difficult for beginners to draw areas (which must be a CLOSED polygon), bridges (where the upper way may not hit any point of the lower way), crossings (where two streets must hit EXACTLY at the same point) and roundabouts. Playing helps you to get a feeling how many different ways are possible.

If you want to start without playing before, you will see your changes on next Wednesday.

Sorry, I didn't read your first post. You come from Hollywood, California which is already covered by some streets from a US government site. So I have to explain the map status of the United States.

In the United States, there are aerial photos of many big cities, so you do not need any software or technical device THERE.

This US government map (TIGER) shows only streets, but NO footpaths and cycleways. It's YOUR job to add banks, churches, cinemas, footpaths, high schools, hospitals, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets and theaters.

A doubleclick creates a new green point which can be described by its attributes.

Below the map, you can see a litte picture (car, bike, city, camera or wood) and a text. By clicking the picture and the text, you can select an attribute,
e.g.
amenity=bank, name=Wells Fargo
shop=supermarket, name=Wal Mart
amenity=place of worship, religion=christian, denomination=African American Baptist Church, name=Jesse Jackson convention center
amenity=college, name=Southern California Vocational College

These additions would be very helpful.
