On the 9th October I decided to do my first bit of street name mapping in the uncharted area of Eggbuckland area of Plymouth. My first attempt was driving around and writing down the names of the streets on a paper copy of open streetmap, this wasn't very practical. My next attempt was to drive around with my laptop on the floor of the passenger side of the car and use a headset to do a running commentary of where I was driving and what the street names were called, this was much better. However, I think it would be easier to use a bluetooth headset and a mobile phone for my next attempt.
Having got the street name data, I compared it to that on Google maps, and guess what, Google maps' data is not that good. There were a number of instances where what appears on Google maps is not quite as it is in real life, things are simplified or just wrong.
As I don't live in Plymouth any more and only visit occasionally this may well be a long term project to get as much data added to the area when I make visits.
I can see openstreetmap getting addictive, there's so much you can add to the maps.

It can definitely get addictive. You'll know that it's really sunk its teeth in when you start planning excursions just to get more map data. You may already be within its jaws, my friend.
