What happened was that the original Scave waterway pointed (upstream) to the wrong direction, so I split it (which made me the owner of 561802752). But I forgot to remove the name of that section. Anyway, I corrected it.

I think the name "le Scave" for osm.org/way/561802752#map=16/47.8451/-3.4645 is simply wrong. May have been my mistake. This waterway is part of J5124200 for which BD Cartage does not show a name, not for the Sandre ID nor for the section. Way 243894623 is part of J5124000.

Hello trial, let me explain, what I did: I used the TMS for BD Carthage in JOSM and tried to stick to the "offical" names. BD Carthage/Sandre uses sometimes different names for the Sandre ID and for the sections of a river. The name for J5124000 is "le Scaff" (see http://www.sandre.eaufrance.fr/geo/CoursEau/J5124000). In the BD Carthage overlay, however, each section is called "le Scave". So, I used the name for the Sandre ID as name for the relation and the section names as waterway names and added it as alt_name in the relation. You have the local knowledge, which I don't have, so if you feel that "le Scave" is more appropriate as relation name, I have no problem if you change it. Cheers, wuff57

Ich bin die Wegstücke vor ca. 1 Jahr selbst gegangen. Wenn das jetzt wirklich abgesperrte Privatwege sind, ist dann der Wanderweg neu beschildert worden? Hi, BD Carthage calls the waterway you named "Ruissaut du Lavoir de Gaillon", "Ru du Canal", so I wonder where you got the name from and which name would be correct.

I'm trying to ensure that all French rivers (in Europe) that are described in Wikipedia are mapped in OSM. I'm aware that the Cebuano wiki entries provide only minimal information. For rivers that have wiki entries in the French wiki I of course link to the French entry. So, the rivers that I link to the Ceb wiki only have entries in that wiki, not in French or another language.

I don't have strong opinions about the name. name=Ruisseau did not disturb me, so I left it. Be aware that some of the waterways that were mapped by Captain47, don't even have a Sandre ID.
Having ways with the tributary role is just the tip of the iceberg of potential inconsistencies. I have seen lakes and riverbanks as part of type=waterway relations, sometimes with a role "riverbank", sometimes without a role. I just came across relation 357319 (for the Nagold in Germany). It contains at the end riverbanks without a role and I think they prevent that your program recognizes the Nagold as an affluent of the Enz. Unless editors like JOSM enforce stricter rules, there will always be some weird mapping which may influence programs that evaluate the data.

confusing side_streams and tributaries is a common problem with French waterways in OSM. Sometimes I corrected it, sometimes not. The tributary role generates a warning in JOSM, but tributary is widely used with French rivers. I did not add tributaries myself, but for existing tributaries I sometimes put longer waterways into a relation and added the relation as tributary instead of individual waterways. So, you could change the side_streams into tributaries, but I would not delete them from the relation.

There are many (smaller) waterways which don't have a name in BD Carthage (the French waterway database). Sometimes there is no name tag in the relation, but often the Sandre ID (the 8-char code) is used as name as well. name=Ruisseau is not widely used. I don't like it too much, but I would leave it.

Hi Captain47, could you check relations 8722779 and 8722781? They contain the same waterways, but the destination is different. It looks as if you included the wrong waterways in 8722781.

You mentioned BD Carthage for the distinction between waterway=stream vs. river. I only have a rough understanding of BD Carthage. I'm grateful if you could tell me where exactly this can be found. I am only aware of the CLASSE field which expresses the length of the "cours d'eau", while "stream" and "river" are rather about the width of the waterway.

It just occurred to me that you may be referring to the difference between waterway=stream and waterway=river. The French OSM wiki is not really specific about it. The English version is more specific: "the commonly accepted rule for OpenStreetMap is that a stream can be jumped across by an active, able-bodied person", but still there is a lot of judgement when you base your mapping on satellite pictures.

Not sure what you are refering to, as I made a number of changes in this change set. If you mean the course of l'Elnon: I used the BD Carthage layer in JOSM. Please check also the note that I added in the relation. If you meant something else, please give me a specific way as an example.

Hi Stereo, thanks for pointing this out. French wikipedia is not specific about the Chiers' spring, so I did not notice the "real" upper section. I have now seen, that there is a bit more in the Luxemburg Wikipedia. I added the section. In general, waterways are tagged as relation of the various pieces so that you can see/select/work on a river in its entirety
