OpenStreetMap
I decided to replace my Google Maps with OpenStreetMap maps. Here is my first attempt at a map:
It uses a PNG copy of the map along with HTML relative positioning to show photos.
The map includes an SVG (which doesn’t work for ie8 or android).
I believe the change to OSM will allow me to create a more dynamic collection of maps than the competitors.

It’s certainly fast, but you may be creating an awful lot of work for yourself by not using one of the existing “slippy map” libraries like Leaflet of OpenLayers.
