Welcome to OpenStreetMap.

As you’re surely aware, names are a very sensitive topic. Please don’t make arbitrary politically-motivated changes to names without wider discussion beforehand. For details of how we deal with names, please refer to http://wiki.osmfoundation.org/w/images/d/d8/DisputedTerritoriesInformation.pdf . Generally speaking, we try to follow the “on the ground rule” where possible. If the people in an area speak a particular language and write signs in a particular language, then that is what we’ll usually use for the “name” tag in OSM.

It is possible to add multi-language names to OSM. Taking osm.org/way/333885063/history as an example (a former railway station), you can see that it currently has a “name:en” and a “name:ru”. If you want to add a “name:az” please do so, but don’t just change the “name” tag as that will only cause problems. You can create maps using these name tags, and many applications (such as OsmAnd) recognise them too.

We’ll review the changes, and where it seems that they don’t reflect the on-the-ground situation as reflected by other mappers in the region we’ll change them back.

I’m sending you this message as one that you have to read before continuing mapping. You be able to continue editing OpenStreetMap immediately after reading it, but please don’t just change a series of names saying “the previous one was wrong, this is correct”.
