Dear user Hartz Beltza,

you are changing many names in Spain from a simple Spanish form to a bilingual “Name1 / Name2” form.

This is not something we usually do in OpenStreetMap. It does happen but only when the area is truly bilingual and actually uses this form on the street signs. I am not local and have no access to street signs but from reviewing your changes I get the impression that you are blindly “translating” Spanish names into the Basque language without actually knowing what name is on the street sign.

Please, in the future, use the “name” tag only for what is on the sign, and use name:xx tags for other names. For example, in

osm.org/way/710480732

you have changed

name=Calle San Román

to

name=San Roman karrika / Calle San Román name:eu=San Roman karrika

and you have not created a name:es tag with the old Spanish-only name. In the future, if you make such edits, please add a link to a photo (e.g. Mapillary, WIkimedia Commons) that shows a street sign with the street name “San Roman karrika / Calle San Román” on it, and also create a name:es tag that contains the old Spanish-only name.

Please also discuss this naming scheme on the Spanish mailing list or the Spanish forum before you make further changes like that. If it turns out that the changes you have already made do not correspond to actual street signage, we might have to revert them.

We welcome a plurality of languages in OpenStreetMap but we cannot allow political fights to erupt over names. It is technically possible to make a map shows only Basque names, and we’re happy to point you to resources to help you with that if you’re interested.
