Hello Brian@Brea,
Andy from OSM’s Data Working Group here.
(following on from previous discussions including on osm.org/changeset/85343051 )
Some of your recent edits have caused other mappers to either complain to us, or undo your changes because they think that they don’t match reality.
As an example of the former, can you explain what osm.org/way/1105692419 is supposed to be now? It was previously (see osm.org/way/1105692419/history ) a highway=footway; something that everyone can understand. However, with no tags on it and no relationship memberships what is it now? What is there that indicates that people can walk from one end to the other?
An example of the latter is osm.org/changeset/127814868 .
As an example of some of the issues in this area can be seen at https://osmose.openstreetmap.fr/en/map/#zoom=16&lat=33.81&lon=-117.9197 . While it’s true that Osmose can flag false positives, clearly not all of these are.
This was mentioned previously at osm.org/changeset/85343051 (where different mappers raised the issue with you). Previously I said “Can everyone interested in editing in this area please try and find a suitable location for discussion and discuss what to do together there?” and that still applies. Maybe the talk-us mailing list would work, or the new Community Forum, or OSM-US’s Slack instance.
One think that it’s important to do is to agree on an appropriate level of detail. For example, the detail that was removed in https://nrenner.github.io/achavi/?changeset=127802386 may or may not have been appropriate or accurate (at first glance to me it looks neither appropriate nor accurate, but please do make that case). If you don’t do this then frankly you’ll face a sisyphean task of re-adding the detail every time that someone has deleted it because they think that it doesn’t match reality and is merely “tagging for the renderer”.
Another thing that you must do is to use changeset comments that explain what you are doing. Currently only about 25% of your latest comments at osm.org/user/Brian@Brea/history have any comment at all.
Please also reply in changeset discussions where people have asked you questions - see for example http://resultmaps.neis-one.org/osm-discussion-comments?uid=416346 .
Talking to people about your vision for these areas is a start to getting their and your projects for mapping these areas aligned.
I’ve sent this message as one that you have to read before continuing to edit, just in case you’re not seeing changeset discussion comments for any reason. You’ll be able to continue as soon as you’ve read it. If you’ve got any questions please email data@openstreetmap.org with a subject line of “Re: [Ticket#2022102810000191] Issue #9127”.
Best Regards,
Andy
