Hi,
Over on osm.org/changeset/39039645 I asked whether you discussed the name change with anyone living there? It’s possible that you didnt see that message because your email is not configured properly, so I’ll send the message this way instead. Note that although it appears as a “block” message you’ll be able to continue editing as soon as you’ve read it, but please do reply on the changeset over at osm.org/changeset/39039645 .
I notice since then that you have made a number of other name changes (in some cases, like osm.org/changeset/39198772 , without any changeset comment at all). Using changeset comments (like you did in osm.org/changeset/39039645 ) helps other mappers to see and understand the reason for the change.
My interest as a member of the Data Working Group is to try and make sure that as tagged the names of places match the local communities’ desire - that might mean the name is in most commonly used language locally (in this case Albanian: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kosovo_Polje ) or it might mean that communities that differ over a name might agree on a “name a / name b” version (like osm.org/node/267762522 ) - but that needs to be discussed locally. If you look at the history of the node osm.org/node/448554221/history you’ll see that a number of previous tags have got lost in edit wars - that’s what we’re trying to prevent. If there is a regularly used Serbian name for a place you can add it as “name:sr” (or “name:mk” for a Macedonian name). People who create maps based on OpenStreetMap data can use language name tags to offer names in the language of the user. As an aside, note that adding a “name a / name b” version where the names are in different character sets will break some data consumers (such as OsmAnd).
Best Regards,
Andy Townsend (SomeoneElse) on behalf of OpenStreetMap’s Data Working Group
