47432077 | over 8 years ago | Hi kyosyo, I am adding a comment on changesets that have modified this area recently as there seems to be a dispute about naming. OSM follows a few guidelines as it relates to disputed territories, which can generally be found in http://wiki.osmfoundation.org/w/images/d/d8/DisputedTerritoriesInformation.pdf. Based on some research from the web, it seems that there is South Korean settlement on these islands that represents the on the ground situation. However, names in other languages, such as name:en, should not necessarily be the simple transliteration of the word. In the case of English, wikipedia points to the name "Liancourt Rocks" as the neutral English word to refer to the islands. A good example of this naming versus transliteration issue is Japan's name. "日本" is "Nippon", yet the English language uses the name "Japan". We should take care not to edit over each other back and forth but rather strive towards a consensus. In this case, I think with the use of "alt_name:*" tags in addition to the "name:*" tags, we can represent many of the different view points in this situation. Of course, this does not stop anyone from using the data on their own website modified as they see fit either. My proposal is that we add the neutral names to tags such as "name:en". (The English Wikipedia in fact greatly favors the use if Liancourt Rocks when discussing this area as well as the disputed situation at hand.) Then tags such as "alt_name:en" can store transliterations. By doing so, we can represent the differing viewpoints. What are your thoughts on this? Best Regards,

47233594 | over 8 years ago | Alright, I will check out the wiki and give it another shot :) (I think the State Capitol is a good one for me to practice on). Thanks! |
47233594 | over 8 years ago | Neat stuff! Is there a guide you recommend for tagging these complex buildings? I've shied away from making any detailed 3D edits because it is intimidating :).
