This and that

Posted by Gary68 on 13 August 2008 in English.

Hi,

I mapped a part of Weilbach today. Streets are mostly present but no names yet. Added a few amenities and cycleways also. I wrote my first two PERL scripts to evaluate OSM files. Quite nice. I am trying to get an access to the SVN currently. Then i will try to produce a more sophisticated script and publish. I plan to program some quality check/assurance. But right now it's only a draft...

Cheers

Service roads and PERL

Posted by Gary68 on 11 August 2008 in English.

Today I only mapped a small area with service roads and I managed to run my first big PERL program: planetosm-excerpt-area.pl

Don't misunderstand, it's not my program, I didn't create it. But after installation of PERL and a few missing modules it began to crunch planet files.

I plan to use parts of it for my own statistical calculations and maybe own mapsets (i.e. only objects I have contributed). But this is a longer way, not done in a day - at least for me.

Cheers

PERL...

Posted by Gary68 on 9 August 2008 in English.

I finished my work in Walluf/Rhine today and added a hiking trip near Rüdesheim. I further installed PERL on my machine and looked at the first scripts - I need to learn a bit... Nevertheless my first "Hello world" appeared!

With my new folding bike I collected lots of amenities in our commercial area here.

Folding bike!

Posted by Gary68 on 7 August 2008 in English.

Hi,

today I think I will buy a nice folding bike with 7 gears. I got a good offer and will check it the afternoon. Then I will put it in the trunk of my car. And then I can do some serious mapping wherever I go :-)

Yesterday I collected the rest of the streets in Walluf/Rhine. Haven't had the time to enter the data yet...

Another village mapped

Posted by Gary68 on 4 August 2008 in English.

Good morning!

Today I finished mapping Wiesbaden Medenbach. I also added a few tracks around Hofheim/Taunus. Then I stumbled upon a map feature: man_made=surveillance. Very interesting. Unfortunately only a few cameras are mapped. I encourage everyone to map surveillance cameras so we know how fast their number is rising! I also added an icon for the cameras to my render rules.

Cheers

Two villages...

Posted by Gary68 on 22 July 2008 in English.

Hi!

Today I visited Delkenheim and Wicker and collected the names for the already existing roads in OSM. I also found some missing footways and a new road. At the weekend I cycled areound Hofheim and added some tracks near the A66. I also changed a crossing in Marxheim into a mini roundabout.

In the near future I plan to map a little around the Rhine. And of course in my vincinity.

I also ordered some posters 60x90cm. The first was a try! But the second order will be a good one. I had to experiment with the print resolution and the render rules for KOSMOS.

Let's go on!

It's raining...

Posted by Gary68 on 18 July 2008 in English.

Hi there,

let's bring the world up to date with my activities. After the weekend I didn't have too much time for mapping. Nevertheless I did some things: First I extended the coverage of tracks around the A66 near Weilbach/Hattersheim. Then I worked on my render rules for KOSMOS and came up with a first version that I published in the category:KOSMOS. And most important, I pimped my notebook. 512MB RAM is definately not enough. Unfortunately it was only possible to add another 512MB. I would have liked a total of 2GB... And because HDs are not too expensive anymore I also replaced the 60GB with a 250GB disk. So now I can do some work. The RAM significantly improves the runtime of KOSMOS operation. What earlier took 15min now takes less than 5min. No more swapping/trashing.

Bye

Today's work...

Posted by Gary68 on 12 July 2008 in English.

Hi everybody!

This morning I wanted to create a real cool and above all BIG map. I downloaded Kosmos 2 and the Hessen.osm file (134MB). After a few minutes my 1.7GHz NB with 512MB RAM gave me the map. I used my own modified RenderRules to lay bicycle ways above everything else - otherwise the are sometimes hidden by streets or mortorways. I also wanted different visualization of tracktypes. So 1 is a straight line, 2 and 3 are dashed and 4 and 5 are dotted, like footways. Then I selected the desired area and told Kosmos to give me a 10.000 x 6.000 PNG. It worked very well - took a few minutes again though. Then I uploaded the file to posterjack.de. Now I am waiting for the result.
But: I also did some mapping today. I went to Wildsachsen which belongs to Hofheim and mapped all streets and a few footways there. Will enter the data later.

Cheers,

Another addict

Posted by Gary68 on 8 July 2008 in English.

Hi everybody,

after I heard of OSM I instantly became an addict. Before I was geocaching (one of the first in Germany). I added the first 100 nodes and ways and everything runs ok. The tiles aren't updated often enough for a beginner to see his results but I installed KOSMOS and plan to have my own render rules which I might publish. I own a Garmin etrex legend HCx and promise to use it for the right thing :-)

Mostly I use josm with added photos but occasionally I change to the web front end because of the satellite images.

I started with some tracks in the fields, mapped a village and a park. Let's see what is the most fun. For me it's best that I can do it where I want and when I want.

I also peeked into tile rendering but I suppose my compute power will not be sufficient to make a difference ;-)
