Long time since I made a diary post but today I feel like it.

Some time ago the Swedish post company did a reorganisation, where most postboxes got their collection times changed. I have been retagging some of these over time, but two days ago when I realized not all postboxes in my home town are mapped (found this one), and the next day I realized two postboxes in my area were tagged wrong (one hasn’t existed since I moved here many years ago and one has been moved changeset) I figured I’d do something about this.

Yesterday I compared the postboxes existing in OSM with the ones on Postnord’s website, and made a list

Under våren 2015 fick vi tillgång till Helsingborgs kommuns flygfoton. Sedan dess har det pågått ett relativt aktivt arbete för att kartera hela kommunen, och vid behov uppdatera/justera.

Jag har personligen främst fokuserat på vägar och byggnader, medan min partner in arms essin (som normalt önskar vara anonym men förstås gärna får träda fram här om han vill) fokuserat främst på landuse. Andra användare har också bidragit, men vi två har under detta 1,5 år samarbetat på ganska nära håll.

Jag kan nu meddela att detta är färdigt, eller så gott som färdigt något blir i OSM:s värld. Först redigerades tätort, och detta var klart någon gång i början av året. Exakt när minns jag ärligt talat inte och jag har inte fört någon logg. Efter detta påbörjades arbetet med landsbygden som nu äntligen är färdigt även det.

Efter-bilderna har även de i efterhand kompletterats med ytterligare markanvändning och landsbygdsmappning runt tätorterna.

För arbetet med Helsingborgs tätort och landsbygden runt omkring har vår lokala HOT-server använts, där man kan skapa rutnät för att underlätta en konsekvent mappning. I love this residential area. It shows that the planners had some sense of humour and at the same time wanted to connect to the town's roots. I'm guessing it's supposed to look like a viking and all the street names are connected to old Danish kings and queens. This shows that streets don't just have to be planned to maximize efficiency, but that it's also possible to have some fun while planning.

Every time someone looks at a map of the town their eyes are drawn to this neighboorhood.

By the way: anyone who's better than me at drawing can check out the area in Yahoo and fix the streets and green areas to be more symmetrical.

Edit: can't make the map zoom enough, but you should see what I'm talking about. If not, just search for "Thyras väg" and you'll find it.

I was out numbering houses today... I always feel so creepy when I do that, looking at houses and mailboxes and typing things down on a piece of paper... The worst part is walking down cul-de-sacs where people are walking in their gardens and just looking at you like you're some kind of creep... All while you are walking around to every house looking for their numbers, and then walk out of the area again without saying a word. I got out of one situation by asking a guy about help with my project and explaining it, but doing that every time is out of the question.

I've been thinking about buying an OSM surveyor vest but I'm not convinced I could go around wearing that and still feeling like a decent human being...

Any suggestions?

This is my first diary entry. I have recently completed my self-appointed task of drawing all the houses in the small Swedish town of Vellinge (6000 inhabitants) based on Yahoo.

All houses are covered except newly built ones. I'm now going to fill in remaining street names and number the houses with a printed map sometime in spring... I have thought about how to draw houses in areas without Yahoo coverage, and decided I'm going to do a field experiment with the areas in Vellinge that aren't covered in Yahoo. I happen to know that most of the houses are identical, and if I just know how many there are and where they start and stop, it should be possible to draw approximations.

Are there any other suggestions of how to draw houses in areas where there is no legal aerial photography?

My personal next stop is the larger town Trelleborg in the southeast of Vellinge, with about 20 000 inhabitants... At least it keeps my abstinence down during the winter months!

I'm very interested in maps and have tried to add some place names to towns I recognize close to where I live. I also tried mapping a road based on the Yahoo map in practice mode but it sucked... Have to get a gps sometime, this ought to be fun.
