TIGER, looking good, getting faster

Publicadu dae Nick Galbreath su 2 cabudanni 2007 in English.

Ignore my last message -- no need to trace! TIGER imports for the USA are restarting. Dave Hansen is the man to see about this.

osm.wiki/index.php/Tiger

I used his scripts and they work some with minor tweaks on Mac OS X.

They run quickly but its very memory intensive. I've modified them to be more friendly and now most data sets take "about 1 minute". The Big Ones still are a hog, but I'm working on that too.

If you have some Unix skills you can pull down the code, and convert any TIGER dataset you want and display in JOSM. For NYC, I've converted TIGER to OSM format and then uploaded it to a Garmin HCX. Looking GOOD! I walked all over Manhattan today and the match was great. (note: I did not upload the tiger data to the live OSM server)

I'll write up my changes, and a HOWTO later this weekend. If you are desperate to play with this, send me a note.

Hello Manhattan!

Publicadu dae Nick Galbreath su 31 austu 2007 in English.

Hello all, I just discovered OpenStreetMap.

Right now NYC coverage is non-existent with the exception of Broadway (which is interesting since it's the oldest street in NYC. It was modeled on the original footpaths the Native Americans used around 1500 A.D. or so).

One great thing about Manhattan is that its mostly a grid (with the exception of Wall Street and West Village), so rapid progress should be possible with Potlach. Tracing is fun!

I'm working on the Lower East Side of NYC, since that's where I live. I'm still getting the hang of the editor and options. Looks like I'll have to use JOSM to fix a misnamed way. Oops.

Comments welcome.
