There are multiple designs of such electrodes. Not always looks a land electrode like a ring. Some are just a single rod running deepin the ground for example that of HVDC Volgograd-Donbass

According http://web.archive.org/web/20051115115248/www.transmission.bpa.gov/cigresc14/Compendium/SACOI.htm the grounding electrode system of SACOI on Corse consists of 50 electrodes placed in a distance of 5 metres in a LINE and not on a circle.
