Had a quick play with Bing tracing | Just befor the news of the bing imagery came, I started mapping housenumbers. But when I heard the news, I stopped because it would be double work anyway. And in Belgium, I've not met one company or government that donated something to OSM or made data public in general. I don't know how it comes. I guess they don't understand the benefits of "free", I think they only see it in the way of "giving away for free" and they aren't thinking about what they can get back from the community. So before bing, you could only map your own house with gps points. |

Had a quick play with Bing tracing | I have bing imagery up to zoom level 18, which is far better than the old yahoo (which I could only use in the minumum zoom of potlatch). I'm finally able to draw buildings and landuses which I can't go around. And I'm doing quite a few buildings: |

Premiers pas sur OSM | bienvenu chez OSM

London winter pub meet-up at the Monkey Puzzle | @Harry - For OSM routing on your android, try navit (you have to install the apk). It works ootb and is fully configurable, just the thing geeks like I (and maybe you) want. My current configuration is on pastebin: http://pastebin.com/3me7j0jT . The rendering isn't so smooth as mapdroyd, but you can display a lot more OSM info. |

Lizenz | The only reason I see to not change the license is because we will lose an amount of data. I don't know what amount yet, but OSM will certainly lose data. Apart from that, I believe the ODBL is better suited than CC-BY-SA since CC-BY-SA is meant for creative works while in fact, OSM is not that creative. I's a database of facts. |

mapping house numbers | That's a lot |
|
mapping house numbers | how do you work with video mapping? do you use a plugin for JOSM? or do you just look at the time of your video and the time of your gpx file? |
|
mapping house numbers | hmmm, I don't know about the phone book. I think it's on the grey edge of copyright violation. I don't know who owns the rights to it. As for walking papers, I've used it, but only for a shopping street. That way I could add more information than I can include in a gpx file. If I'm noting only numbers (maybe a L or R to indicate the side), I can just as good use gpx. |

mapping house numbers | Sorry, I forgot to put it in the post, it's in now. yesterday, I worked on my home town: osm.org/?mlat=50.93779&mlon=3.06229&zoom=17&layers=M and today in the city where I am during the midweek. My method is to walk a street with my android in my hand, and stop at approx every 5th house (or every house if there's lot of space) and note the number with OSMtracker on a gpx track. Once home, the regular thing: downloading data with JOSM and editing the map with the gpx file. |

Eibahnstraße Fahrräder frei | see this wiki page: osm.wiki/Key:access#Routing_restrictions both keys are used: oneway:bicycle=no AND

Getting Started | If you use linux (it doesn't work on windows or mac yet), you can make your owne rendering with mkgmap. It's settings are rather simple and thus the rendering is not that great. I've used it to highlight the boundaries af a village together with the major roads in a lesson. If you want to go more advanced, you can set up an osmarenderer service, but this will require a lot of hours making config files to get the rendering correct. about searching the map, someone is making a better search engine which might get implemented into the OSM front page in the future. Take a look here: http://oegeo.wordpress.com/2010/11/08/a-better-search-field-for-openstreetmap/ |

First Road Mapped today | Welcome to OSM, I hope you can contribute well to your region. happy mapping |

Going where no mapper has gone before... | Walking papers can only work when about 80% of the streets is already mapped, it's good for noting names and POIs. About the accuracy of the GPS. When I travel through an already mapped area (and I don't have time to map extra details), I put my gps tracing on. Afterwards, I compare the gpx trace with the map, if the difference is too big, I put the trace on OSM and I take the mean of all the public gps traces of that road. That way, the roads get precise, even if no gps is accurate. |
