Wijzigingen ongedaan maken

Wijzigingen ongedaan maken

I zal er eens naar kijken

WOF#4. Database server load

You don’t only need to look at the cost/GB, you also need to look at the durability.

SSD can only accept a limited number of writes. So it’s good to put your OS on, because you don’t re-write your OS constantly. But the database of OSM is constantly edited, and if you want to keep the visible data on that disk, you need to take all those writes into account.

I think (from the top of my head), for a database, some sort of RAID, together with a compressed file system is best. The RAID is pure speed gain over normal configuration (but RAID is already used). And the compression will take load off IO (because the compressed data is smaller), while the CPU won’t have difficulties handling compression to save, or decompression to get the data (that CPU is cheaper anyway).

Worst OSM Fixer

I’ve used is_in tags on places where I don’t know the boundary, so I could (hopefully) determine the boundary after enough is_in tags.

And no, there are no copyright-free maps which contain boundaries of Belgium.

My Area, 100% complete.

Great job, but I wouldn’t call it 100%

When I started with my village, also a lot of minor roads were missing. But now I have this: osm.org/?lat=50.9389&lon=3.0652&zoom=17&layers=M

I know this can’t be done in 2 months time (I’ve been working for over 2 years on it), but there is always more work to do in OSM.

If you want to see big areas (more than one little village of me) with great quality data, you probably need to look at Germany. osm.org/?lat=50.937821&lon=6.944208&zoom=18&layers=M

Newbie

Nice, welcome to OSM.

If you also want to add other elements (like the address, phone number, service ways leading to the building, …), you are very welcome (and if you have questions, just ask).

Mapping while on holiday in Brazil

To speed up your GPS lock time, the app “gpsfix” works quite good. It uses the WiFi networks and cell towers around to get an approximate location, which speeds up the time you need to get a fix.

You just have to launch the app, and it will do the work in the background. So you don’t have to wait until the fix to launch the app you really want.

And for the map viewing part, I mostly use OsmAnd now. It has an offline map viewer, search engine and router. And the possibility to add POI (although the choice of POI you can add is limited, and you can’t add other objects such as ways).

osm.wiki/IOS

You can see a bunch of iOS apps on the link above (together with their features, such as offline data, map viewing, routing …)

I can’t recommend one, since I don’t own an iOS device.

mapping charity shops

If you have technical questions, about how to render a map etc, I could help you (I think) and in any case, I know people who can certainly help you. But I can’t help with getting these things organised.

If you want, you can send me a PM.

still waiting for planet-file and daily-diffs

The database is writable, but the diffs will only be in their final spot after the licence change (which is taking quite long TBH)

for now, there are diffs available via the temporary location mentionned above.

GPS navigation with Osmand+

I’ve also used OsmAnd lately, and although the performance of routing has gone up, I feel like the quality of the given route went down. Osmand used to give better routes (at least that’s how I remember it).

Now, the advantage of the better performance is that when you decide not to follow the route, it’s re-calculated quite quickly.

Btw, if you really want the latest and greatest changes, you can always compile maps yourself. It’s explained at the Osmand site, and not really more difficult than installing maps for Garmin GPS ;)

...

When something is build as a house, but used as a restaurant, the building is a house, and the usage is restaurant. Translated to OSM:

building=house amenity=restaurant

At least, that’s what I think.

First post!

For a GPS, you might consider using a smart-phone. As with a smart-phone, you have extra apps to help the mapping (so you can take notes with a location attached), and it’s no problem to take geo-referenced photos.

Smart-phones also have navigation apps (that make usage of OSM data). I use OsmAnd f.e.

Buslijnen Ulrum

welcome

OSM is indeed quite addictive (I still can’t figure if that’s a positive or negative thing). Just remember that everything you do is welcome, and everything you don’t do will be done by someone else (eventually).

And if you have questions, just ask.

Welcome

3D drawing is in the lift, although still very experimental (and most of the time the programs are Linux only during development).

But I have to warn you, although it’s possible to do 3D renderings of buildings with OSM, OSM wasn’t meant to do this. So you won’t get the nice things you can make with SketchUp.

If you want to do 3D modelling, I suggest a tool like Blender. But that (on the other hand) has nothing to do with geographical data. Only with 3D renderings.

I also wanted you to point to http://indoorosm.uni-hd.de/ as it had the nice feature of 3D routing inside a building. But the 3D routing seems to be dead for now (at least on my computer). It was a nice feature when it worked.
