Gateways, Cycle Barriers, Stiles, Bollards, Steps - Will you fit!

If you use a wheelchair, cycle with a trailer, cycle a trike or…. you can find it incredibly frustrating trying to work out where you can go.

I’m on a mission to try to make OpenStreetMap more useful to these user groups. If you can plan your journey avoiding barriers that will stop you, it helps. So, I’m on a mission to get barriers tagged according to the wiki, particularly in GB where I live.

I produce a map for a Garmin device which shows barriers that need their tags updating (GB only at this stage) - ‘barriers filtered’. I also produce a ‘map’ which I use when riding my recumbent trike, this shows barriers which will definitely block my progress, because of their dimensions, and barriers which are not fully tagged and therefore ‘may’ stop my progress. I’m planning to produce other maps, specifically for use whilst using a wheelchair - depending on its dimensions. I’m also open to requests if you have a particular need.

Hopefully someone with more skill than me will produce an app or online map which also helps people plan their journeys according to these barriers.

I also produce other maps for use on Garmin devices which you may find useful - nothing to do with barriers, although I may start to incorporate that into them in the future.

• Avenue Verte - small (just the areas of England and France containing the Avenue Verte,
• Avenue Verte - large (Most of France & most of England - again the Avenue Verte is highlighted.)
• North Sea Cycle Route - covers the parts of the Countries in Europe that contain the North Sea Cycle route - highlighted route to make navigation easier.
• GB Canal Map - not suitable for navigation as will route for a cycle. Shows Locks, Bridge names / numbers, winding holes, and some other canal features.
