According to the original idea/proposal for path, there is no difference between a "highway=footway" and a "highway=path + foot=designated".

Path was defined to describe a more general category of highways: everything not intended for motor vehicles with four or more wheels, which covers all ways "below" highway=service and highway=track. According to this interpretation, footway, cycleway and bridleway are special cases of paths.

If none of the three more specific categories adequately describes the path, using highway=path is an obvious choice. Maybe the most common example for a path that doesn't fall into either of the footway/cycleway/bridleway categories are "bush tracks", but this doesn't mean that highway=path is synonymous with those. You therefore cannot reliably read any information about width, surface etc. from the highway=path tag itself.

In many situations, though, a path *can* be described by one of the more specific categories. Some choose to use highway=path plus additional tags (such as foot=designated) nevertheless, as a matter of personal preference. Back during the proposal vote, however, most mappers preferred to keep the established and convenient single-tag solutions for those common situations.

JOSM funktioniert definitiv auch unter Java 1.6 - es wird in einiger Zeit wahrscheinlich sogar nur noch unter Java 1.6 funktionieren.

Interessant ist vielleicht, ob das ein Original-SUN-Java war. Andere Varianten (die von Linux-Distributionen gerne mal installiert werden) machen oft Probleme.

Zur Auswahl der Java-Version: Vielleicht klappt diese Lösung aus dem Ubuntuusers-Wiki auch auf openSUSE?

If you don't need to fully automate it, you could use JOSM's search function. Searching for
amenity=bicycle_parking -capacity
would select what you want - you could then copy the selection, paste it into a new layer and save to .osm (or convert the layer to .gpx, depending on where you want to use it).

We are creating a database of information that can be used (and is being used) for making maps, but also for routing engines, 3D visualizations, street name lists, etc.. Nobody knows all applications that have been or will be developed using OSM. Therefore, if someone wants to put effort into adding some information to the map, it's best to assume that they have a good reason to do so.

Let's cite the wiki main page here:
"OpenStreetMap creates and provides free geographic data such as street maps to anyone who wants them. The project was started because most maps you think of as free actually have legal or technical restrictions on their use, holding back people from using them in creative, productive, or unexpected ways."

I'm quite sure that discouraging people from adding data if it is not immediately necessary for our current applications will not help to bring along creative and unexpected uses of geographic data.

Wo genau fehlt denn eine deutsche Übersetzung? Im Projekt gibt es so viele Programme und Texte, da ist schon eine konkretere Angabe nötig.

openstreetmap.org selber ist jedenfalls deutsch (bei entsprechenden Browsereinstellungen) und die wichtigsten Seiten im Wiki haben ebenfalls Übersetzungen. Mit dem Editor JOSM (osm.wiki/DE:JOSM) gibt es auch eine Möglichkeit, die Karten in einem komplett ins Deutsche übersetzten Programm zu bearbeiten.

Wie Nightdive schon ausgeführt hat: Außer für Garmin haben wir keine Karten für kommerzielle Navis, und auch die Möglichkeit zur Erstellung von Garmin-Karten haben wir nicht etwa der Großzügigkeit des Herstellers zu verdanken.

Natürlich wäre es überhaupt kein Problem, die Daten auf kommerzielle Navis zu bringen, wenn deren Hersteller kooperieren würden. Beschwerden also bitte an deren Adresse. Leider ist denen ihre Geldquelle in Form teurer Karten (und -updates) wahrscheinlich wichtiger als ein paar unzufriedene Kunden.

Das Plugin hat bei mir noch nie richtig funktioniert, habs allerdings auch nicht besonders intensiv versucht. Mal auf einer Mailingliste oder im Forum nachfragen, würde ich empfehlen.

I agree with wieland: This should be mapped as a node with the barrier=bollard tag, if I understand your description correctly. Most existing routing software using OpenStreetMap data will not yet interpret this correctly, though, as it has been introduced only some months ago and requires significant software modifications.

I have been using JOSM for about a year now and consider it rather stable, even when using the "latest" (untested) versions. Of course, as with any software, there will be bugs, and, as with any software, they are practically impossible to fix if the developers cannot reproduce them.

If you can describe more precisely what you did, what version of JOSM you were using etc., it might help the developers to fix the problem. I mean, seriously, what are developers supposed to do in response to your diary entry?

das sind ja ganz schön viele Fragen. ;-)

Dass manche POIs in Mapnik nicht angezeigt werden, ist normal, die Entwickler versuchen absichtlich, die Karte etwas weniger voll darzustellen. In Osmarender kommt es leider zu Überlagerungen, was daran liegt, dass das Programm wohl noch nicht in der Lage ist, selbstständig die Dichte von Beschriftungen auszugleichen -- und daran, dass man nicht ganz so weit reinzoomen kann wie in Mapnik. Soweit ich sehe, ist die von dir bereitgestellte Information aber völlig in Ordnung, da müssen unsere Renderer einfach noch etwas besser werden.

Ähnliches gilt für deine Hausnummern: Interpolationen werden von den Renderern nicht aufgelöst, sondern als Linie angedeutet. Wenn sie wollten, könnten sie die Nummern aber mit den vorhandenen Daten durchaus einzeln einzeichnen.
Sind die Gebäude, die man dort sieht, Teil dieser Hausnummernreihe? Wenn ja, wäre es ohnehin überlegenswert, die Hausnummern an den jeweiligen Gebäuden einzutragen, um sie exakt zuordnen zu können.

building=detached ist Teil eines Vorschlags, die Art eines Gebäudes statt immer nur yes kennzeichnen zu können:

Wird eigentlich durchaus schon verwendet, ist aber noch nicht wirklich gut dokumentiert. detached speziell bezeichnet ein freistehendes Wohngebäude.

Besonders im deutschsprachigen Teil hat man dort auch sehr gute Aussichten, Fragen beantwortet zu bekommen.

Ein wenig nachhelfen musst du da schon noch, aber es gibt das "Suchen"-Feature (unter "Bearbeiten" im Menü oder per Strg+F).

Du kannst z.B. erst einen Bereich auswählen und dann per Suchbegriff »highway:residential OR highway=unclassified« die Auswahl auf Objekte einschränken, die Straßen dieser Typen sind. Alle anderen Straßen sowie sämliche sonstigen Objekte bist du dann los.
